About Tantara

Tantara is a Bengali bistro on Osborne Road in Jesmond, bringing the food, culture and hospitality of Bengal to Newcastle.

We're looking for an experienced, hands-on Assistant Manager to help lead our restaurant team and deliver consistently high standards of food, drinks and service.

This is a floor-based management role for someone who is equally comfortable looking after guests, running the bar and managing the kitchen pass during a busy service.

The Role

Working alongside the management team, you'll take responsibility for the smooth running of daily restaurant operations, ensuring every service is organised, efficient and welcoming.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead restaurant services, supporting and directing the front of house team.
• Manage the kitchen pass as an expediter (expo), coordinating food orders, checking presentation and accuracy, and ensuring dishes reach guests efficiently.
• Work confidently behind the bar, preparing cocktails, spirits, wines and other drinks to the required standards.
• Maintain excellent communication between the kitchen, bar and front of house teams.
• Deliver a consistently high standard of guest service and handle any issues professionally.
• Support staff training, coaching and day-to-day performance.
• Oversee opening and closing procedures, cash handling and daily operational checks.
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness, food safety, licensing compliance and organisation.
• Support stock control, ordering and waste management.

What We're Looking For

Essential Experience

• Previous experience as an Assistant Manager, Supervisor or experienced Shift Leader in a busy restaurant.
• Strong bar experience, including preparing cocktails and managing bar service.
• Experience working on the kitchen pass as an expo, coordinating food orders during busy periods.
• Confidence leading a small team and taking responsibility for a restaurant service.
• Good understanding of food safety, allergens and licensing requirements.
• Excellent communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends.

We're particularly interested in someone who enjoys being involved in every aspect of restaurant operations rather than managing from the sidelines.
