HBCU News is looking for a passionate, motivated, and customer-focused Assistant Store Manager to help lead our retail team at Union Station in Washington, DC.

As the Assistant Store Manager, you will support the Store Manager in overseeing daily operations, leading and developing team members, driving sales, and delivering an exceptional customer experience. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys coaching others, thrives in a fast-paced retail environment, and is passionate about celebrating and promoting the rich history, culture, and legacy of (HBCUs).

Responsibilities

• Assist the Store Manager with the day-to-day operations of the retail store.
• Lead by example in providing outstanding customer service and creating memorable shopping experiences.
• Supervise, coach, and motivate Retail Sales Associates to achieve individual and team performance goals.
• Assist with hiring, onboarding, training, and scheduling team members.
• Open and close the store following company policies and procedures.
• Monitor sales performance and help implement strategies to meet revenue goals.
• Ensure accurate cash handling, register balancing, and point-of-sale operations.
• Maintain inventory accuracy by assisting with receiving, stocking, merchandising, and inventory counts.
• Ensure the sales floor is clean, organized, fully stocked, and visually appealing.
• Support the execution of promotions, product launches, and special events.
• Address customer concerns professionally and resolve issues promptly.
• Promote loss prevention and maintain compliance with company policies and safety standards.
• Step into the Store Manager's responsibilities in the Store Manager's absence.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of retail experience, with at least 1 year in a leadership or supervisory role preferred.
• Strong customer service, communication, and leadership skills.
• Experience with cash handling and point-of-sale (POS) systems.
• Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced retail environment.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Reliable, professional, and dependable.
• Ability to work weekends, holidays, and flexible schedules.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in retail management, hospitality, admissions, or community engagement.
• Knowledge of HBCU history, traditions, and culture.
• Experience with merchandising, inventory management, and team development.
