Assistant Programmer

The Assistant VTL Machine Programmer supports senior programming engineers and shop floor supervisors in creating, editing, and optimizing computer numerical control (CNC) programs for Vertical Turning Lathe (VTL) machines. This role bridges the gap between raw engineering blueprints and production, ensuring that large, heavy, or complex components are machined to precise industrial tolerances safely and efficiently. Key Responsibilities

• Program Assistance & Editing: Assist in developing 2D and 3D CNC programs for VTL machines. Edit and optimize existing G-code and M-code programs directly on controllers to adjust speed, feed, and depth of cuts. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
• Blueprint Interpretation: Read and accurately interpret technical manufacturing drawings, engineering blueprints, and GD&T symbols. [1, 2]
• Machine & Tool Setup: Assist operators in machine setup, including adjusting chuck jaws, workholding fixtures, setting tool offsets, and inputting wear geometries. [1, 2, 3]
• Software Operations: Utilize CAM software (such as Mastercam or Delcam/Powermill) under supervision to generate toolpaths for turning, facing, boring, and grooving operations. [1, 2, 3]
• Quality & Inspection: Perform in-process dimension checks using precision instruments (e.g., Vernier calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, pie tapes) to guarantee parts match technical specifications. [1, 2, 3]
• Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Identify programming errors during dry runs or initial batch tests, perform minor program debugging, and carry out basic operator-level machine upkeep. [1, 2, 3]

Required Technical Skills & Competencies

• Controller Knowledge: Hands-on familiarity with operating and troubleshooting Fanuc or Siemens control systems.
• Programming Languages: Basic to intermediate proficiency in manual G-code and M-code editing.
• CAD/CAM Literacy: Exposure to design and manufacturing tools like Mastercam, AutoCAD, or similar structural software.

Qualifications & Experience

• Education: ITI / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Machinist, or Fitter trade.
