Established in 1976, Gardiners is a well-respected, family-run multi-discipline contractor. Celebrating 50 years of delivery, we operate across central England, Wales, the South West, and the M4 corridor. We specialise in four key divisions: Groundworks & Minor Civils, Building Repairs & Refurbishment, Grounds & Landscaping, and Electrical Works.

Role Overview

We are seeking an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our commercial team at our head office in Stroud. This role is an excellent opportunity to develop your career within a thriving, multi-disciplinary environment.

Working closely with our Senior Quantity Surveyors, you will assist in managing the commercial aspects of various projects across our Civils, Building, and Landscaping divisions. You will play a vital role in ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cost Management: Assist in preparing valuations, cost analyses, and budget forecasts for active projects.
  • Subcontractor Management: Help manage subcontractor accounts, from processing payments and variations to assessing final accounts.
  • Tendering & Estimating: Assist in the preparation of tender submissions, measuring drawings, and compiling bills of quantities.
  • Site Measurements: Carry out site visits to measure and value completed works on-site alongside project managers.
  • Financial Reporting: Assist in compiling monthly cost-value reconciliations (CVR) and cash flow forecasts.
  • Procurement: Help procure materials and subcontractor services, ensuring compliance with budget constraints and project specifications.
  • Contract Administration: Gain exposure to and assist with standard contract mechanisms (e.g., NEC or JCT), ensuring all project paperwork is filed accurately.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: A degree or HND in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a closely related construction field (or currently studying towards one).
  • Experience: Ideally 1–2 years of experience in a similar assistant or trainee surveyor role within a contracting environment (experience in civils, building maintenance, or groundworks is highly advantageous).
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (specifically advanced Excel). Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Driving Licence: A full, clean UK driving licence is required, as the role will involve travel to various regional sites and depots.

Key Attributes

  • Analytical Mindset: Excellent numerical skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Communication: Clear and confident verbal and written communication skills for interacting with clients, subcontractors, and site teams.
  • Team Player: A collaborative attitude with a willingness to learn and adapt to a fast-paced environment.
  • Problem Solver: Proactive approach to identifying potential cost overruns or commercial discrepancies early.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary dependent on experience
  • Company pension scheme
  • On-site parking at our Gloucestershire head office
  • Clear career progression paths with mentorship from senior team members
