Job Overview
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join their Commercial team. In this role, you will support the cost management and financial control of construction projects from inception to completion. Your energetic approach will help ensure projects stay within budget, adhere to contractual obligations, and achieve financial efficiency. This position offers an exciting opportunity to develop your expertise in cost control while working alongside experienced professionals dedicated to delivering high-quality infrastructure.
Responsibilities
Support the commercial management of allocated projects from tender/award through delivery and final account, working under the direction of the Group Commercial Manager and/or a Senior Quantity Surveyor.
- Assist with the preparation and maintenance of project budgets, cost plans, cash-flow forecasts, CVRs and cost-to-complete forecasts.
- Prepare accurate measurements, take-offs, valuations and supporting commercial information from drawings, specifications, site records and subcontractor submissions.
- Assist in preparing and submitting interim applications for payment and in tracking certificates, payments, retentions and outstanding amounts.
- Identify potential variations and changes from site information, instructions and revised drawings; maintain variation/change registers and support pricing and substantiation.
- Assist with subcontractor and supplier procurement, including preparing enquiries, obtaining quotations, completing tender comparisons and supporting order recommendations.
- Review subcontractor applications and invoices against progress, orders and agreed rates, raising queries where information or entitlement is unclear.
- Maintain accurate commercial records, including orders, quotations, instructions, correspondence, measures, site records, cost information and supporting evidence.
- Work closely with Project Managers and site teams to understand progress, labour, material, plant and subcontract costs and to ensure commercial information reflects the current project position.
- Attend site visits, progress meetings and commercial reviews as required, recording actions and following up agreed commercial matters.
- Assist with preparation of monthly commercial reports, highlighting cost movements, variations, risks, opportunities, cash position and matters requiring senior review.
- Support the preparation and agreement of subcontract and client final accounts, ensuring records and supporting information are complete and accurate.
- Assist with tender and pre-construction activities including measurement, cost analysis, supplier/subcontract enquiries, benchmarking and value-engineering exercises.
- Develop knowledge of construction contracts, notices, payment provisions and change-control requirements and apply these consistently with appropriate senior support.
- Raise commercial risks, discrepancies or potential overspends promptly rather than allowing issues to remain unresolved.
- Ensure all work is undertaken in line with the Group commercial procedures, delegated authorities, confidentiality requirements and relevant contractual obligations.
- Work collaboratively with Commercial, Operations, Finance, Procurement and HSEQ teams to support safe, compliant, quality and profitable project delivery.
- Actively participate in training, mentoring and development activities to build capability and progress toward full Quantity Surveyor responsibility.

- Strong organisational skills with keen attention to detail and accuracy.
