Assistant Technical Superintendent

Position Overview

Schuyler Line Navigation Company (SLNC) is seeking an Assistant Technical Superintendent to serve as our on-site technical representative for a vessel repair project in the Port of Busan area, South Korea. This is a one-time, project-based engagement expected to last 8–10 months, through completion of the repair period and redelivery of the vessel. The position ends when the project is complete.

The selected candidate will be employed in Korea through SLNC's Employer of Record (EOR) partner and will work on SLNC's project, reporting to SLNC's Fleet Technical Director. The Assistant Technical Superintendent will oversee the repair work on SLNC's behalf and serve as the primary liaison between SLNC, the shipyard, class, and vendors.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management

An Assistant Technical Superintendent who will oversee the repair scope from yard arrival through sea trials and redelivery, tracking progress against the agreed schedule and specifications.

Monitor yard work quality and confirm repairs meet technical specifications and SLNC standards.

Track repair costs against budget, explain variances, and review change orders and yard invoices for SLNC approval.

Provide regular written progress reports (at least weekly) on status, schedule, cost, and open issues.

Identify technical problems as they arise and recommend solutions, modifications, or scope changes.

Compliance and Safety

An Assistant Technical Superintendent who will coordinate with class surveyors and flag representatives so required surveys, inspections, and certificates are completed and valid at redelivery.

Monitor shipyard safety practices related to SLNC's vessel and report incidents and near misses.

Support risk assessments and incident investigations and prepare related reports.

Liaison and Coordination

An Assistant Technical Superintendent who will serve as the communication link between SLNC (in English) and shipyard management, subcontractors, and vendors (in Korean).

Coordinate sourcing of technical supplies and spares with SLNC's Supply Department.

Escalate issues requiring SLNC decision or approval promptly.

Qualifications

An Assistant Technical Superintendent who is fluent in English and Korean, written and spoken (required).

Sea-going experience aboard commercial vessels, such as service as a licensed marine engineer or deck officer (required).

Demonstrated project management experience, ideally on ship repair, dry-docking, or newbuild projects (preferred).

At least four years of relevant marine technical experience (preferred).

Maritime academy graduate or degree in marine engineering, naval architecture, or a related discipline preferred.

Familiarity with class and flag survey requirements; U.S.-flag experience a plus.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel).

Strong attention to detail, sound independent judgment, and the ability to handle confidential information professionally.

Position Details

An Assistant Technical Superintendent who can work a fixed-term, project-based employment of approximately 8–10 months, ending at project completion.

Location: on site at the shipyard in the Port of Busan area, South Korea. Working hours will follow the shipyard schedule and project needs.

Compensation: Estimated annualized salary range of USD $80,000–$85,000 (approximately $6,670–$7,080 per month), prorated for the length of the engagement and paid through our EOR partner, with statutory benefits under Korean law. Final compensation will be based on qualifications and experience.

Work authorization: Candidates must currently hold authorization to work in the Republic of Korea. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
