Position Summary

The Athletic Trainer provides comprehensive injury mitigation, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-performance support for military personnel. Working as part of an integrated Human Performance team, the Athletic Trainer helps preserve mission readiness, improve physical resilience, and reduce preventable time lost to musculoskeletal injury.

The role operates within the Athletic Trainer's professional scope of practice and in coordination with physicians, physician assistants, physical therapists, strength and conditioning professionals, cognitive performance specialists, and other authorized healthcare personnel.

Key Responsibilities

1. Injury Mitigation, Evaluation & Care

  • Provide evidence-based injury prevention, examination, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning services within the authorized scope of practice.
  • Evaluate acute and chronic musculoskeletal concerns and determine appropriate treatment, referral, or duty-modification recommendations.
  • Apply taping, bracing, protective equipment, and other approved techniques to prevent and manage injury.
  • Refer personnel with new, worsening, or undiagnosed medical conditions to an appropriate medical provider.

2. Rehabilitation & Return to Performance

  • Develop and implement individualized rehabilitation and reconditioning plans consistent with provider direction and operational demands.
  • Serve as a bridge between clinical rehabilitation and unrestricted strength and conditioning participation.
  • Monitor progress, document outcomes, and communicate status and restrictions to authorized members of the integrated team.
  • Support safe, timely return to duty while protecting long-term health and performance.

3. Human Performance Integration

  • Collaborate with physical therapy, strength and conditioning, cognitive performance, nutrition, and command stakeholders to deliver coordinated services.
  • Advise program leadership on sports medicine, injury trends, risk factors, rehabilitation, and return-to-performance practices.
  • Deliver education on injury mitigation, recovery, mobility, movement quality, and self-management strategies.
  • Support field-based training and other operational activities as required.

4. Documentation, Quality & Safety

  • Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential clinical and performance documentation in approved systems.
  • Collect and report program metrics while protecting personally identifiable and health information.
  • Follow applicable professional standards, clinical protocols, infection-control practices, and equipment-safety requirements.
  • Participate in quality assurance, case review, in-service training, and continuing professional development.

5. Culture, Rank, and Structure

Understand and/or be familiar with the culture and rank structure of the organization within the military or law enforcement organization the position resides. Becoming familiar with the customs, courtesies and the protocols and policies are paramount to becoming a successful member of the team.

Qualifications

  • Current Basic Life Support/CPR and AED certification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the clearance or installation access required by the assignment.
  • U.S. citizenship when required by the contract or duty location.

Preferred
