Reports to: Project Operations Manager
Dotted Line Report: Chief Technology Officer
Location: San Antonio, TX
About Covenant:
Covenant Communications is a premier Audio, Video, and Lighting (AVL) integration company specializing in the design and delivery of high-performance technical systems for houses of worship, schools, and performance venues. We bring together creativity, precision, and craftsmanship to deliver systems that inspire and empower.
Our team blends deep technical expertise with operational excellence—driven by a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation.
Position Summary:
The Field Application Engineer role is both strategic and field-focused—designed to bridge technical design excellence, agile field execution, and client-facing coordination.
This position serves as a hybrid between engineering and field operations, ensuring that system designs transition seamlessly from proposal through commissioning. The Field Application Engineer collaborates closely with Account Managers, the Operations team, and technical leadership to deliver precise, functional, and well-documented solutions.
You will report directly to the Project Operations Manager, with a dotted line to the Chief Technology Officer, ensuring strong alignment between operational leadership and technical innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engineering Support for Bid Work & Design-Build Projects
- Collaborate directly with Account Managers, as well as Bid Team, to provide technical expertise during bid preparation and system design phases.
- Consolidate bid specifications, scope documents, and design intent into accurate and competitive bid proposals ready for submission.
- Support design-build documentation efforts, assisting in layout development, block diagrams, and system schematics as required.
- Translate architectural and engineering documents into actionable AVL system designs that meet both technical and budgetary objectives.
- Field Installation Functionality Oversight
- Provide on-site engineering direction, ensuring proper implementation of designed systems and quality assurance throughout the installation process.
- Collaborate with Project Leads, Field Project Managers, and Technicians to troubleshoot and resolve on-site challenges.
- Conduct system commissioning, device configuration, and final testing to verify operational integrity.
- Lead or assist with end-user training and system handoff, ensuring client satisfaction and usability.
- Provide field feedback to the Engineering and Design teams for continuous improvement of documentation and installation standards.
- Installation WIP Planning and Agile Project Integration
- Actively participate in SAFe-aligned project planning intervals, coordination meetings, and field readiness activities.
- Engage in project cadence planning, backlog grooming, and Kanban stage transitions (Kick-Off → Engineering → Field Execution → Close-Out).
- Support the Operations and Planning teams in developing and maintaining realistic timelines for installation readiness.
- Ensure that field requirements, material logistics, and system commissioning steps are properly sequenced and documented.
- Participate in Agile sprint reviews and retrospectives to identify process improvements for future cycles.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in AVL system engineering, field commissioning, or integration environments.
- Strong understanding of audio, video, lighting, and control systems—particularly in educational or institutional applications.
- Ability to interpret bid documents, specifications, and architectural drawings.
- Proficiency in system design, documentation tools, and integration workflows.
- Hands-on familiarity with lighting control systems, DSPs, network configuration, and system testing.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills, with an ability to collaborate across departments and client teams.
- Strong problem-solving mindset and adaptability to field conditions.
- Working knowledge of project management or Agile delivery frameworks (SAFe familiarity preferred).
- Strong background and understanding of Networked AV Solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
- CTS, CTS-D, or CTS-I certification.
- Experience with D-Tools, AutoCAD, or similar design software.
- Dante, Q-SYS, or Crestron certification(s).
- Familiarity with lighting and control systems used in educational or worship environments.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology, or a related field.
