Controls Technician — Robotics & Machine Building (Future Controls Engineer)

About Autoblocks

Autoblocks, Inc. (www.autoblocks.co) is an outgrowth of the Fancort Industries machine building group. Our mother company, Fancort Industries (www.fancort.com), has been in business for over 50 years and is a leader in aerospace tooling and manufacturing automation — an ITAR-registered, NASA-approved supplier and the exclusive North American distributor of Japan Unix robotic soldering.

Autoblocks builds on that foundation with our own industrial control platform and a growing line of production machines: robotic hot solder dip machines, PCB routers, Japan Unix robotic soldering cells, induction heating systems, and other standard machines for electronics manufacturing. You get startup energy backed by five decades of machine-building pedigree — the machines you help build ship to real factories, and you'll work directly with the Director of Engineering.

The Role

You'll be the hands-on builder on our machine projects: wiring control panels, assembling machines, loading and testing PLC/HMI programs, and troubleshooting electrical and motion systems. You don't need to know robotic soldering or induction heating yet — we'll train you. What you do need is strong electrical fundamentals, some programming aptitude, and the drive to take ownership of machines from build to ship.

This is a role for someone who wants to grow. As you master our machine platforms, the path leads to controls engineering — writing PLC and HMI code, designing control systems, and supporting customers in the field.

What You'll Do

  • Build and wire control panels from electrical schematics
  • Mechanically assemble machines: frames, actuators, motors, sensors, guarding
  • Load, test, and debug PLC/HMI programs; assist with motion tuning and I/O checkout
  • Learn Japan Unix robotic soldering, hot solder dip, and induction heating processes
  • Run machine test and burn-in, document results, and support factory acceptance tests
  • Troubleshoot electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical issues during builds and service
  • Help improve our standard machine designs as we scale

Must-Haves

  • Strong electrical fundamentals: reading schematics, safe work in control panels, 24VDC/120VAC/480VAC systems
  • Panel wiring and layout experience (terminal blocks, VFDs, servo drives, safety circuits)
  • PLC/controls exposure: ladder logic, HMIs, sensors, motion — or clear aptitude and eagerness to learn
  • Mechanical aptitude: hand tools, machine assembly, basic fabrication
  • Willingness to learn robotic soldering and induction heating — attitude and curiosity matter more than existing knowledge
  • Work authorization and ability to work on site in Fairfield, NJ

Nice-to-Haves

  • Servo/stepper motion systems, kinematics, or robotics experience
  • Basic machining (mill, lathe, drill press)
  • Structured text or PC-side programming (Python, C#, etc.)
  • Field service or customer-facing experience
  • Technical writing / documentation habits

Who Thrives Here

Curious, methodical, calm under pressure. You like real hardware and real deadlines, you take pride in a clean panel and a machine that runs right the first time, and you're willing to put in the extra push when a machine has to ship. In return you get overtime pay, real mentorship, and a fast track to an engineering role.

Benefits

  • 401(k)
  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Overtime paid at time-and-a-half
  • Training on robotic soldering, induction heating, and PLC programming
  • Defined growth path to salaried Controls Engineer role
