What they need

Position Overview

The Automation Engineer will develop and implement automated testing solutions to support the integration of an acquired electronic-monitoring product line into a new, web-based platform. This is an approximately 10-month contract opportunity working alongside the integration team to establish reliable, repeatable testing processes.

The primary focus is to create automated test coverage across the platform's user interface, backend services, and APIs, while developing tools to verify data accuracy and device functionality throughout the migration process. This role will help transition the team from predominantly manual testing to a scalable automation framework that reduces risk and supports successful customer migration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain automated regression tests for web applications, backend services, and APIs.
  • Create automated tests for new functionality introduced to support the transition of existing customers onto the target platform.
  • Develop data-validation tools to compare legacy and target systems, including record counts, field mappings, and data relationships.
  • Build end-to-end automated test scenarios covering device enrollment, location updates, event processing, alerts, and reporting.
  • Establish and integrate automated test execution into CI/CD pipelines, ensuring results are available during development builds and migration rehearsals.
  • Automate test-data generation and environment configuration to support consistent, repeatable test execution.
  • Investigate test failures, identify whether issues originate in the application or test framework, and coordinate defect resolution with development and QA teams.
  • Partner with QA to establish an automation strategy, prioritizing test coverage based on business and migration risk.
  • Prepare technical documentation, testing procedures, and coverage reports to support a smooth transition of the automation framework to the ongoing QA team.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience of five or more years.
  • Approximately 3–5+ years of hands-on test automation experience with production web applications; experience with system integrations or data migrations is preferred.
  • Strong experience with Playwright or comparable browser automation frameworks such as Cypress or Selenium.
  • Experience testing REST APIs and backend services, along with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or SQL Server.
  • Proficiency in SQL for data comparisons, reconciliation, and integrity validation.
  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines, Azure DevOps, or Jenkins.
  • Strong programming skills in JavaScript or TypeScript; experience with Python, C#, or Java is also beneficial.
  • Solid understanding of risk-based testing, reliable test design, selector strategies, Git, and defect management.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, including the ability to communicate test results, coverage gaps, and outstanding risks to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

The following experience is beneficial but not required:

  • Background in electronic monitoring, GPS tracking, telematics, IoT, public safety, or criminal justice technology.
  • Familiarity with cloud environments such as AWS, Oracle Cloud, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience validating multi-tier web applications and distributed services.
  • Exposure to performance and load testing tools such as k6 or JMeter.
  • Experience implementing automation in teams that have historically relied on manual testing.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with globally distributed engineering teams in a deadline-driven project environment.
