Automation Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a hands-on Automation Mechanical Design Engineer with strong experience in customized automation equipment and machine design. The successful candidate must be able to work independently, develop mechanical concepts from project requirements, perform engineering calculations, and correctly size and select automation components. This is not purely a CAD drafting position. The candidate is expected to understand how an automation machine works and take ownership of the mechanical design from concept and component selection through detailed design, assembly, testing and troubleshooting.

Key responsibilities

• Independently develop mechanical concepts and designs for customized automation machines and equipment.
• Perform 3D mechanical design and 2D engineering drawings using SolidWorks and/or Autodesk Inventor.
• Perform engineering calculations and correctly size and select mechanical and automation components, including linear guides, bearings, ball screws, servo motors, gearboxes, couplings, pneumatic cylinders, valves, vacuum components, electric actuators, belts, pulleys, gears and related machine components.
• Design machine frames, mechanisms, fixtures, grippers, pick-and-place systems, robot end effectors and other automation assemblies.
• Prepare complete Bill of Materials (BOM), fabrication drawings, assembly drawings and detailed part drawings.
• Source suitable materials, components and suppliers while considering technical performance, cost and lead time.
• Conduct design reviews and ensure designs meet functionality, safety, manufacturability and maintainability requirements.
• Work closely with assembly, electrical and controls teams during machine building.
• Provide hands-on troubleshooting and design modification support during assembly, testing and commissioning.
• Support FAT, installation and commissioning when required.

About you

• Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or equivalent.
• Minimum 2–5+ years of hands-on mechanical design experience in industrial automation, customized machinery or automated equipment.
• Able to independently design an automation machine or module from concept to complete detailed design.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering calculations and component sizing/selection.
• Strong 3D CAD capability using SolidWorks and/or Autodesk Inventor.
• Good understanding of machine mechanisms, tolerances, materials, fabrication and assembly processes.
• Able to prepare complete BOM, assembly drawings and fabrication/detail drawings independently.
• Strong troubleshooting and practical problem-solving ability.
• Able and willing to work directly with the assembly team to resolve machine design issues.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
