What they need

Service Advisor
Ewert's Automotive — Minooka, IL / Wilmington, IL

We're a family-owned independent shop operating in Minooka and Wilmington. Most of our work comes from repeat customers and the people they send us, which is the only kind of reputation worth having. The service advisor is the reason that keeps happening.

The work

We're not a shop that waits for things to break. The goal here is that a customer's car leaves our lot and doesn't leave them stranded before their next service. That means seeing people routinely, doing a real inspection every visit, catching what's starting to go, and fixing it on a schedule the customer chose instead of one the car chose for them.

The advisor is how that works. You're walking customers through the tech's digital inspection with the photos in front of them, explaining what's fine, what's getting close, and what needs attention now. You're helping them build a plan for this visit, the next visit, before winter. You're quoting the work, getting approval, and keeping them updated so nobody has to call and ask what's going on. Over time you're the person they call before they buy a used car, not after.

You'll also be the go-between with the techs and keeping the board moving, flagging what's waiting on parts, making sure nothing sits.

Some days a car still shows up on a hook. Even with good maintenance, things happen — and when they do, that person is standing in our lobby having one of the worse days of their month. They didn't plan for this, they may not have the money for it, and they're bracing to get taken advantage of because that's how it's gone for them somewhere else.

That's the moment this job matters most. It means slowing down instead of rushing them, telling them what you actually know and admitting what you don't yet, being straight about cost and timing even when it isn't what they want to hear, and doing what you can to get them back on the road. A breakdown is a bad day. It shouldn't also be a bad experience. Handle it right and that's the customer who's still here in ten years, and who sends us their family.

What we're looking for

Someone who's good with people. Not a salesperson in the wear-them-down sense. This job is mostly explaining things clearly and being trusted over a long stretch of time. The customers who spend the most with us are the ones who've been coming for years, and that only happens if they leave feeling straight with.

Organized. You're tracking a dozen cars, a dozen customers, and a parts delivery that's late, all at once.

Calm when someone in front of you isn't. That's the whole skill some days.

Comfortable giving a recommendation and standing behind it. Plenty of people can read a tech's notes out loud. The job is helping someone decide — and being right often enough that they stop second-guessing you.

Automotive experience is a huge help.

About the opening

Here's the honest part: we may or may not have a seat open the week you apply.

We hire slowly and we'd rather meet good people before we need them than scramble when something changes. So we keep talking to advisors year-round. Sometimes that means a job offer in two weeks. Sometimes it means we stay in touch for six months and call you when something opens.

If you're happy where you are, that's fine, come have a conversation anyway. Worst case you find out what another shop in the area is paying.

Interested?

If any of this sounds like the kind of shop you'd want to work in, apply here. We'd rather have the conversation early than late.
