Wanted: a technician who's bored of easy work

Somewhere out there is a tech who can hear a chain rattle from the other side of the workshop and already knows what's coming. Who's had enough of being handed another oil service while the interesting job goes to someone else. If that's you, read on. If it isn't, no hard feelings.

What you'd actually be doing

Audi, VW, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar and Land Rover. Timing chains and belts. Clutches. Engines stripped properly to get at the fault, not bodged around it. Major mechanical work to manufacturer standard, plus as much diagnostics as you want to take on.

We have specialist service techs, and they're good at what they do, so routine servicing isn't landing on your ramp. The occasional small job gets tagged onto a big one, because that's how real workshops run, but your week is the heavy stuff.

The kit, because this is the bit that usually disappoints

ODIS, TOPIx, XENTRY, ISTA and PIWIS. Manufacturer systems, not a one-size-fits-all box that half works on everything.

That means no hunting round forums for a wiring diagram that turns out to be for the wrong model year. No half a procedure and a guess at the torque figure. The correct data, first time, for the car in front of you.

PicoScope and the full accessory kit alongside it. If you want to build the diagnostic side of your career, you'll have the tools and the backing to do it.

The terms

£45,000. A real number, not an OTE, not "up to", and not something you have to hit a moving target to earn. Reviewed regularly and honestly.

Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 5:00. Weekends are yours. We're not going to ring you in January asking you to cover a Saturday.

28 days' holiday, including the Christmas break. You'll be at home for it, not on a rota.

Training funded, diagnostics and EV in particular. EV qualified already? You'll be straight onto that work. Not yet? We'll pay for it. Ask and you go.

How we run the place

You won't speak to a single customer. Front of house owns that from first phone call to handover, so jobs reach you written up properly and nobody drops you in it halfway through.

You won't chase your own parts either. We have a parts manager whose job is getting the right bits in for the job in front of you, and a workshop manager who plans the work so you're not stood about wondering what's next. You turn up and fix cars.

The workshop is clean and organised because it makes the work quicker, not because someone's due an inspection.

We've been going since 1979, still family run, 13 of us in Yeovil. Small enough that you're not a payroll number, big enough that the work is always there.

What we're looking for

• 3+ years qualified, with genuine big-job experience behind you
• Comfortable with wiring diagrams and manufacturer repair instructions
• Level 3 IMI or equivalent preferred
• IMI EV or hands-on hybrid and EV experience welcome, and trainable if not
• Full UK driving licence

Above all, temperament. Bolts shear, cars fight back, and the job that was booked for three hours takes seven. We want someone who works the problem and keeps the rest of the team laughing while they do it.
