What they need

Who we are We are responsible for preparing for the upcoming New Space era by planning and developing mobility systems that operate on the lunar surface. Hyundai Motor Company, as a comprehensive mobility company redefining the future of transportation, is expanding the scope of mobility from Earth to space through the development of lunar exploration mobility. We seek experienced professionals who are eager to explore space with us and grow within a team with high growth potential.

Responsibilities In this role, you will design and implement camera-based perception and VSLAM (Visual SLAM)/VIO (Visual-Inertial Odometry) algorithms that enable a rover to perceive its surroundings and estimate its position autonomously under GNSS-denied, low-light, and dusty lunar-surface conditions. You will iteratively validate the algorithms in onboard software simulator environments (Isaac Sim/OmniLRS) and integrate them with the autonomous path-planning module to deliver robust autonomous driving performance on the lunar surface.

■ Development of Camera-Based Perception Algorithms for Autonomous Driving of Lunar Exploration Mobility

ㅤ· Designing robust perception algorithms for lunar-surface conditions, including GNSS-denied environments, low light, dust, and high contrast

  • Detect terrain, obstacles, and landmarks, and extracting feature points from camera images
  • Develop multi-camera calibration (intrinsic/extrinsic) and image-preprocessing pipelines
  • Apply deep-learning-based perception algorithms (object detection/segmentation) and evaluating model optimization

■ Development of VSLAM (Visual SLAM) Algorithms for Autonomous Driving of Lunar Exploration Mobility

ㅤ· Designing, implementing, and iteratively validating VSLAM algorithms for autonomous driving on the lunar surface

  • Design feature-based/direct front ends for GNSS-denied, low-light, and dusty environments
  • Design initialization/bootstrapping algorithms that create a map from scratch after landing without a prior map
  • Develop 3D lunar-surface mapping and loop-closure algorithms
  • Design graph-optimization/filter-based back ends and correcting accumulated drift

■ Development of VIO (Visual-Inertial Odometry) for Autonomous Driving of Lunar Exploration Mobility

ㅤ· Developing camera- and IMU-based sensor fusion algorithms for six-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) pose estimation

  • Implement camera-IMU time synchronization and extrinsic calibration
  • Optimize alignment accuracy through sensor-noise and drift compensation

■ Simulator-Based Validation and Integration of Autonomous Driving Algorithms

ㅤ· Iteratively validating and optimizing VSLAM/VIO algorithms using Isaac Sim/OmniLRS simulator environments

  • Validate algorithms with simulated lunar-surface data, including terrain, lighting conditions, and dust
  • Integrate and validate perception/VSLAM/VIO modules with autonomous path-planning algorithms
  • Design automated test scenarios to assess algorithm performance and accuracy

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years of software development experience in aerospace, autonomous driving, or robotics
  • Proficiency in English (fluent in both written and oral business communication)
  • Those with hands-on development experience in at least one of camera-based perception, SLAM/VSLAM, or VIO
  • Those with software development capability in computer vision and robotics
  • Those who can develop Windows/Linux programs using C++, Python

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing navigation and localization algorithms for GPS-denied environments, including GNSS-denied and low-light conditions, or experience developing cold-start initialization algorithms for SLAM systems operating without prior maps
  • Experience applying SLAM/VIO to a launched satellite or rover project, or to a physical robotic platform
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed journals or conferences, or patent application experience in the fields of SLAM, perception, or computer vision
  • Experience with SLAM/VIO frameworks (ORB-SLAM, VINS-Mono/Fusion, Kimera)
  • Experience with NVIDIA Isaac Sim, OmniLRS, ROS2, and Gazebo
  • Experience with PyTorch/TensorFlow and CUDA/TensorRT
