What they need

Who we are

Tapestry is used to record the progress and care of over a million young children. Many nurseries, schools and relatives rely on us to provide a secure platform to record the care of children, and we are the largest provider of that service in the UK.

We are a pioneering Ed Tech organisation, owned and run by our founders. We are 35-strong, and are based in a beautiful period building in the centre of Lewes, East Sussex.

What we’re looking for

We are looking for an experienced engineer to manage our AWS estate, find improvements and optimisations, ensuring security and robustness required to support our platform. You’ll work alongside our development team and deploy to test and production environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintenance: Maintain and improve existing cloud infrastructure in AWS.
  • Develop: Continuously improve the architecture of our estate using Infrastructure as Code.
  • Security: Ensure critical systems and data are backed up, secure, and recoverable.
  • Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues, including diagnosis into application code.
  • Cost Management: Implement strategies to control costs.
  • Improvement: Research and implement appropriate new technologies
  • Automation: Develop automation strategies for system management using relevant tools.
  • Continuous Integration: Manage code deployments to our development, test and production environments
  • DevOps: Support the dev team to implement appropriate tooling

Essential skills

  • Strong experience with AWS services, including CloudFormation, Virtual Private Cloud, RDS, EC2, S3 in an enterprise environment, or similar cloud service and demonstration of ability to transfer skills
  • Proficiency in managing and configuring Linux web servers in cloud environments
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Bash, Ruby and Python
  • Collaborative and pragmatic approach to solving problems and finding solutions
  • Experience of researching and selecting appropriate cloud technologies
  • Knowledge of security best practices and data protection law (GDPR)
  • Experience of supporting an enterprise-level B2C or B2B application
  • Willingness to work outside normal working hours occasionally when required

Our employees work in a flexible way but we strongly prefer candidates who live close enough to join us in the office on a regular basis. We believe this fosters the kind of collaboration and team spirit that has been key to our success.

Desirable

  • Awareness of CI/CD pipelines and application development methodologies
  • Experience with GIT or similar source control system
  • Experience of managing dev tooling including Docker containerisation
  • Application development, especially PHP
  • Database management in MySQL

Why you might want to work for us

We offer a friendly and supportive working environment. We also work with cutting-edge tools and have a high-calibre team with a wide range of skills and interests.

Benefits include:

  • 31 days leave per year, plus bank holidays
  • A uniquely homely office – an award-winning, beautifully renovated, listed Georgian building with large, open spaces and quiet, cosy corners
  • A supportive team
  • Flexible, family-oriented working conditions

If you think this sounds like the right fit for you, and are keen to be part of a team that makes a real difference to the lives of teachers, children and parents, then we’d like to hear from you.
