Job Description:
Our client, a technology company provides marketing, sales and customer support services ranging from consumer goods to the rapidly changing print media space. We operate a lead generation platform and marketing network handling millions of new customers monthly, which has rapidly become a leader in its space. We also run customer rewards programs and ecommerce efforts with big brand partners, marketing to a wide range of book and magazine lovers.
Responsibilities:
- Architect solutions that scale horizontally and handle heavy traffic without manual intervention; real-time paths like click tracking and lead validation are where latency and correctness both count.
- Build and operate serverless backends on AWS Lambda behind API Gateway, event-driven flows over EventBridge and SQS, DynamoDB, and Step Functions for orchestration.
- Write and deploy the infrastructure yourself; every stack we run is AWS CDK v2 in TypeScript.
- Plan out and execute a path for iteratively migrating legacy applications to newer solutions reading the existing C#, PHP and SQL Server systems well enough to establish what they really do, then designing and shipping the replacement in sequenced waves alongside a running business.
- Build and maintain the data pipelines behind partner and internal reporting DynamoDB streams into Aurora PostgreSQL, S3 through Glue into Redshift Serverless, and the materialized views on top.
- Work with product owners to understand feature needs and integrate them into existing products.
- Assist our partner companies with integrating to our APIs, and build custom integrations with theirs.
- Debug applications across the full stack, diving into services and logs to help diagnose issues and replicating customer scenarios.
- Help define test strategy and triage alongside our QA engineer, and keep quality consistent across the release cycle.
Requirements:
- Substantial experience building and running production software for seven years or more.
- Production experience with AWS, particularly Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, SQS or EventBridge, S3, IAM and CloudWatch services you've run and debugged, not only configured.
- Strong working knowledge of TypeScript and Node.js; you should be productive in it from the start.
- Production experience with both SQL and NoSQL data stores PostgreSQL, MySQL or SQL Server for relational work, including query tuning and indexing, and DynamoDB or similar for key-value and single-table design. Most of our systems use both.
- Understanding of infrastructure as code, and experience implementing it yourself with CDK, the Serverless framework, Terraform, CloudFormation or similar.
- Proven experience working in scalable, high-traffic application platforms
- Comfortable inheriting systems you did not build, working out what an unfamiliar system actually does and deciding whether to extend it, replace it, or leave it alone.
- Knowledge of CI/CD workflows and unit testing best practices; we use GitHub Actions across every repository.
- Strong history of observing best practices with Git and task management.
- Excellent written communication, and comfort working asynchronously with a small distributed team.
- Functional knowledge of HTML, CSS and a modern front-end framework, and comfort maintaining UIs. This is a primarily-backend role, but our team is full-stack in some capacity.
Our Stack:
- Languages: TypeScript and Node.js across every new service and front end; Python for ETL and data tooling; C#, PHP and T-SQL in the legacy estate being replaced.
- Compute and APIs: Lambda, ECS behind an ALB, Docker, API Gateway, EventBridge, SQS, Step Functions, DynamoDB Streams.
- Data: DynamoDB, Aurora PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Redshift Serverless, AWS Glue, dbt, Snowflake.
- Infrastructure: AWS CDK v2 in TypeScript and Serverless Framework
- Front end: React 18, Vite, TanStack Query, Remix, Shopify Polaris and App Bridge
- Delivery and quality: GitHub Actions, multi-stage dev / test / prod, Jest, Vitest, ESLint, Prettier, SES and Postmark
- Tooling: Enterprise AI coding assistants, in-repo project context, agent-assisted code audits
Nice To Have
- Previous experience scaling a legacy .NET, PHP or Java application into modern best-practice standards, and enough C# or PHP to understand what you're replacing
- Deep experience with AWS's serverless technology offerings
- Python, particularly for ETL and data work
- Day-to-day use of AI coding assistants in a real engineering workflow, and the judgment to tell when a confident answer is wrong
- Transactional email and deliverability at scale SES, Postmark, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, bounce and complaint handling
- Ad tech experience lead generation, tracking, or attribution
- Analytics tooling Redshift, AWS Glue, dbt or Snowflake
- Consumer privacy and data compliance work, particularly CCPA and DSAR workflows
- Ecommerce platform integrations; we run a multi-merchant Shopify platform, though prior Shopify experience is not expected
