Senior Azure Data Architect – GenAI / RAG / Agentic Data Layer - Freelance

The role

Our client needs a senior Azure Data Architect to own the data layer behind GenAI, RAG and Agentic AI applications. This is not a hands-on LLM or agent development role. The focus is designing how enterprise data and knowledge are ingested, prepared, stored, governed and made available for retrieval and AI use, alongside modernising the existing Azure data platform.

Must-haves

• Senior, enterprise-level Azure Data Architecture experience, recent and hands-on
• Azure Cosmos DB: essential, with real project depth
• Azure Synapse Analytics: strong and current, with clear personal design ownership
• Proven production experience designing the data architecture behind a RAG, GenAI or Agentic AI application (personal ownership, not just involvement)
• AI-ready data architecture, including data preparation for retrieval and hands-on use of storage/vector-search technologies
• Structured and genuinely unstructured data
• Metadata/configuration-driven ingestion and scalable platform design
• Strong data modelling, architecture ownership and modernisation of existing platforms
• Implementation-ready architecture (designs delivery teams can build from)
