Work model: Hybrid, onsite 4 days per week (Tuesday through Friday)

Role Overview

This is a hands-on back-end engineering contract in Dearborn. The engineer will build and support the server-side layer of business applications, including APIs, microservices, and database access. Day to day, that means writing Java microservices with Spring Boot, integrating with upstream APIs, and deploying to GCP infrastructure and databases. The engineer will partner with front-end developers, product owners, designers, and architects, and will follow established architecture guidelines. Java and Spring Boot depth combined with GCP exposure and some React familiarity is the harder part of this profile to find.

Key Responsibilities

• Meet with customers and stakeholders to understand use cases and turn them into working solutions.
• Design, build, and deliver Java microservices and APIs using Spring Boot.
• Build integrations with upstream APIs and services.
• Deploy applications to the cloud (GCP) and support the infrastructure behind them to improve resiliency and reliability.
• Manage data storage and retrieval using database technologies such as Oracle and MySQL.
• Work with front-end developers (React) to connect user interface elements to back-end services.
• Collaborate with product owners, designers, and architects, and stay aligned with architecture standards.
• Solve complex technical problems across languages, frameworks, and tools.

Required Qualifications

Experience:

• 8+ years in IT, including 4+ years in software development.
• Engineer 3 level: practical experience in two coding languages, or advanced proficiency in one.
• Bachelor’s degree.

Technical Skills:

• Java
• Spring Boot
• Back-end API and microservices development
• Database experience (Oracle, MySQL, or similar)

Preferred Qualifications

• React front-end experience
• GCP infrastructure and database experience (the requisition says candidates will work with GCP but doesn’t list it as a required skill)
• Python as a second back-end language (the position description names it alongside Java)
• Google Cloud developer or architect certification (adjacent)
• Experience with containerized deployments (adjacent)
• CI/CD pipeline experience (adjacent)
