Afterrealism is a small geospatial software consultancy in Canberra. We build maps, data platforms, and cloud systems for organisations across Australia to a standard set inside Geoscience Australia and CSIRO.

About the role

You'll build the server side of our geospatial platforms: APIs, data pipelines, and the spatial services that our web and mobile apps depend on.

Our stack is Python-first — FastAPI, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, GDAL, and cloud-native deployment. You'll design systems that handle large spatial datasets efficiently and deploy them to Cloudflare and AWS.

What you'll do

• Design and build REST and GraphQL APIs in FastAPI or Django
• Build ETL pipelines for large geospatial datasets (GDAL, rasterio, shapely)
• Model and query spatial data in PostGIS
• Design async task queues, caching layers, and background jobs
• Deploy and operate services on cloud infrastructure

What we're looking for

• 2+ years of Python backend development
• FastAPI, Django, or Flask experience
• PostgreSQL and PostGIS fundamentals
• Async programming (asyncio, aiohttp, or similar)
• Docker and cloud deployment experience

Nice to have

• Geospatial Python libraries (GDAL, rasterio, shapely, geopandas)
• Serverless / edge platforms (Cloudflare Workers, Lambda)
• Message queues (Redis, RabbitMQ, SQS)
• Open-source contributions

Pay: Rs20,000.00 - Rs150,000.00 per month
