Backend Java Engineer

Description

We are looking for an experienced Back-end Java Engineer to join a highly skilled engineering team working on large-scale, privacy-critical services used by millions of people globally.

This is a long-term assignment in Malmö, Sweden, where you will work on complex distributed systems with high demands on reliability, scalability, performance and security. The role is fully on-site, five days per week, and you should also be available for evening meetings approximately two times per week due to international collaboration.

You will be part of a small, autonomous team with end-to-end ownership of services, from design and development to production operations. The environment is fast-moving, and priorities may shift as new capabilities, risks or technical dependencies emerge. We are therefore looking for someone who thrives in ambiguity, takes initiative, challenges assumptions when needed and continuously looks for ways to improve systems, processes and technical decisions.

About the role

You will work with back-end services that operate at significant scale, where privacy, availability and performance are essential. The work involves building and improving frameworks, APIs and services used both internally and by other engineering teams. You will reason about distributed systems, production behaviour, failure modes and quality from the start, not as an afterthought.

This role suits someone who is genuinely curious, driven and technically deep. You enjoy understanding how things work under the hood, reading source code when documentation is not enough, and pushing solutions from “working” to robust, maintainable and scalable.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and operate scalable back-end services in Java.

• Own services from technical design through production.

• Work with performance, reliability, availability and security at scale.

• Debug complex production issues related to load, concurrency and distributed systems.

• Collaborate with multiple engineering teams and manage technical dependencies.

• Write clear design documentation and communicate technical decisions effectively.

• Continuously improve architecture, automation, testing and delivery practices.

Required qualifications

• Strong production experience as a back-end engineer, typically 5+ years.

• Deep Java knowledge, including memory model, garbage collection, allocation pressure and concurrency.

• Experience with java.util.concurrent, virtual threads and/or reactive models.

• Proven experience building and scaling customer-facing web services.

• Strong understanding of authentication, authorization, availability, reliability and performance tuning.

• Solid understanding of distributed systems, consistency, partitioning and failure modes.

• Experience with data storage and caching technologies such as Cassandra, Redis, memcached or similar.

• Experience building REST-based services using Netty or similar frameworks.

• Experience with CI/CD tooling and automated testing.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Meriting experience

• Knowledge of cryptography standards and protocols such as PKCS, KMIP, X.509, AES, KDF or CA.

• Experience with key handling, privacy-preserving systems or security-critical platforms.

• Familiarity with ML systems, frameworks or algorithms.

• Experience with GitHub, Maven, Docker, Spinnaker and Kubernetes.
