What they need
Senior Backend Platform Engineer, MyLawAdmin (Node, TypeScript, Postgres)
Over the past year we built a multi-tenant practice-management platform that runs law firms day to day operations. It includes a staff dashboard, a client portal, an admin console and the backend behind all of them. We are hiring a Senior Backend Platform Engineer to own how that platform runs and help ship and maintain the core and feature service offerings.
You will work directly with the law firm principal who designed and built the system, who leads the platform and its architecture, and with a senior developer who works firm-side and ships feature lanes end to end. Product ideas come from the two of them; your job is to understand how everything works and runs, say where it should run differently, and ship the code. The codebase is a year old, test-heavy, and documented with numbered architecture decision records.
What you will do:
- Learn how the whole platform runs, service by service, and become the person who can answer where anything happens and why.
- Own the unattended layer: the services, workers, scheduled jobs, queues and integrations that run without anyone clicking.
- Own the data layer in production: schema changes, migrations and backfills with rollbacks, and tenant isolation that holds up under review.
- Own reliability and security: observability, incident response, secrets and access, and getting us ready for an outside review.
- Answer feature briefs from the principal and the senior developer with a contract they can build against, then build your half.
- Ship every week in small reviewed pull requests, and write the short design note before the code when a change deserves one.
Tech stack:
- Backend: Fastify 5, TypeScript, Node 22, Zod, pino, Sentry.
- Data: Postgres with hand-written SQL migrations and row-level security; Redis for leases and queues; SpiceDB for authorization
- Frontends you will wire into: Next.js 15 and 16, React 19, our own design system.
- Tooling: GitHub Actions on self-hosted runners, Vitest against a real Postgres, an OSV supply-chain gate.
What we are looking for:
- Experience building and running backend services in Node and TypeScript, including at least one multi-tenant SaaS you kept in production
- You read an unfamiliar codebase quickly and find the running path: where a request enters, which worker picks it up, where it is logged
- Strong Postgres: you write SQL and migrations by hand, you have run a backfill on a live table with a rollback ready, you have used row-level security or another tenant-isolation model, and you can read a query plan
- You have built or operated a queue or outbox: idempotency, retries with backoff, dead letters, at-least-once delivery
- You instrument what you ship, and you have been the person paged for it
- Security habits: secrets, sessions and tokens, rate limiting, audit logs; you can write a threat model for a change
- You write integration tests against a real database as part of every change, and short design notes and PR descriptions a colleague can act on
Nice to have:
- Transactional email or SMS at volume: webhooks, bounces, suppression lists
- Authorization systems such as SpiceDB or OpenFGA
- Legal-tech, compliance or regulated-data experience
- Enough React to connect a backend door to an existing screen; no design work is expected
Why join us:
- You own how the platform runs, not tickets, and ship to real users every week
- A test-heavy, documented codebase with real multi-tenant and security problems to solve
- Direct collaboration with the principal and one senior developer
