Backend Software Engineer

About the role

Our client is a Kuala Lumpur based cloud technology company that builds software for international clients. They are setting up a new engineering team for a greenfield project, and are hiring several backend engineers to build it from the ground up.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain backend services and APIs in Go.
• Design event-driven, distributed services that scale horizontally and deploy independently.
• Find and fix performance bottlenecks, concurrency issues and resource limits.
• Deploy and run containerised services on AWS using Kubernetes.
• Set up autoscaling, health checks and recovery so services handle changing traffic.
• Use infrastructure as code and automated deployments.
• Build asynchronous pipelines with Apache Kafka, handling retries, duplicates, ordering and failures.
• Design and tune relational database schemas, queries and indexes.
• Write well-tested code with unit, integration and end-to-end tests.
• Add logging, metrics, tracing and alerts to the services you build.

About you

• At least 3 years building and running production backend systems on AWS or a similar cloud-native platform.
• Strong hands-on Go for production backend work.
• Experience with services handling thousands of transactions per second, and able to explain how throughput was measured.
• Hands-on horizontal and dynamic scaling of production workloads.
• Deploying and running applications on Kubernetes.
• Practical Kafka experience: producers, consumers, topics, partitions, consumer groups and failure handling.
• Relational and NoSQL databases, specifically Couchbase, including data modelling, indexing and performance tuning.
• Solid grasp of RESTful APIs, concurrency and distributed systems.
• Automated testing, code reviews and CI/CD pipelines.
• A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience is also considered.
