Backend Software Engineer (Java / Python)

📌 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:

A client of byteSpark.ai is recruiting two Backend Software Engineers to help develop new capabilities for a specialised data integration and analytics product. Based in Kuala Lumpur, these roles offer a hybrid arrangement with office attendance on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The engineering environment uses Java and Apache NiFi for data processing and integration workflows, and Python for backend APIs. We are looking for engineers with hands-on commercial experience in at least one of these areas. You do not need to be equally strong in Java and Python, and previous telecommunications experience is not required.

You will contribute to production software, develop and maintain backend components, investigate issues, work with data and collaborate with experienced engineers. These opportunities suit practical problem-solvers who want to build real product capabilities while developing specialist skills in a technically challenging environment.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿:

We are looking for 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀-𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 and want to keep learning. You may be strongest in Java and data pipelines, or in Python and API development. Either background could be a good fit.

We are interested in what you have 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁, 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘁 in a commercial environment, rather than how many technologies appear on your CV. Engineers who can work methodically, ask thoughtful questions and grow with guidance from an experienced team will be particularly well suited.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻:

▸ Develop and enhance backend capabilities for an established data integration and analytics product.

▸ Build, maintain or extend services and integrations using Java or Python, according to your technical strengths.

▸ Contribute to data ingestion and processing workflows, including technology such as Apache NiFi where relevant.

▸ Work with SQL queries and application data, collaborating with database specialists when deeper expertise is needed.

▸ Debug issues, test changes, improve maintainability and support reliable production software.

▸ Collaborate with the backend team lead and other engineers through code reviews, problem-solving and knowledge sharing.

🎯 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:

▸ Approximately two years or more of hands-on commercial software development experience, with demonstrable contributions to backend applications, services or data-processing components.

▸ Strong practical programming experience in Java or Python, supported by evidence of production work. Expertise in both languages is not required.

▸ Relevant backend development experience in at least one area: Java applications and data integration/ETL workflows, or Python APIs and backend service integrations.

▸ Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases, including writing queries to retrieve, filter and join data. Advanced database administration or query optimisation is not required.

▸ Experience maintaining or extending existing code, investigating defects, debugging applications and checking that changes work as intended.

▸ Evidence of a systematic approach to problem-solving and the ability to explain individual technical contributions to projects.

▸ Ability to collaborate with other engineers, learn unfamiliar tools and work constructively with feedback.

▸ Ability to attend the Kuala Lumpur office on Mondays and Tuesdays as part of the hybrid working arrangement.

✨ 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀:

▸ Hands-on experience with Apache NiFi or comparable ETL and dataflow platforms.

▸ Experience developing Java-based backend or batch-processing components using frameworks such as Spring Boot or Spring Batch.

▸ Experience building and maintaining Python REST APIs using frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask or Django.

▸ Experience with data ingestion, transformation, validation, routing or integration across multiple systems.

▸ Practical use of Git, Docker, automated tests, CI/CD pipelines or collaborative code-review practices.

▸ Exposure to data-intensive applications, performance troubleshooting or production incident resolution.

▸ Knowledge of IP networking, TCP/IP protocols, PCAP analysis, Wireshark, packet inspection or telecommunications-related systems.

▸ Exposure to both Java and Python, or examples of successfully learning new technologies in a commercial engineering role.

This is an opportunity to work on 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 in a specialised engineering environment, while building deeper knowledge of backend services, data integration and analytics.

The team is open to candidates coming from other industries and is prepared to help capable engineers develop familiarity with its niche technologies. You will be able to contribute through the skills you already have while expanding into new technical areas.
