Backend Software Engineer (Python / Node.js / Java) Consultant (4-7 Years Experience, 1 Year Contract)

We are looking for an experienced Backend Software Engineer to join our team in designing, developing, and enhancing a large-scale analytics platform supporting Singapore's public transport operations.

The platform integrates data from fleet management systems, onboard devices, and operational systems to support data-driven decision-making, predictive maintenance, and AI-enabled insights.

You will play a key role in designing and delivering scalable backend services, microservices, and system integrations, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the platform remains secure, reliable, and capable of supporting evolving operational and analytics requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance backend services, RESTful APIs, and microservices.
• Design and implement distributed systems and backend integration components connecting multiple applications, devices, and data sources.
• Develop and optimise backend services supporting data processing, transformation, and analytics workflows.
• Design, manage, and optimise relational and NoSQL databases, including schema design, query optimisation, and data integrity.
• Implement message queues, event-driven architectures, and asynchronous processing to support reliable system integration.
• Develop, deploy, and maintain cloud-native applications on AWS using containerisation and modern deployment practices.
• Implement authentication, authorisation, logging, monitoring, observability, and application security best practices.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex application, performance, and integration issues to ensure system reliability and operational stability.
• Write clean, maintainable, and testable code, and contribute to code reviews, technical discussions, and solution design.
• Support automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, deployments, and production operations.
• Collaborate with frontend engineers, data engineers, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
• Maintain technical documentation and contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within an Agile development environment.

Requirements

• 4–7 years of relevant experience in backend software development, including designing and delivering enterprise-grade applications.
• Strong programming proficiency in at least one of Python, Node.js, or Java .
• Proven experience designing and developing RESTful APIs, microservices, and backend integration services.
• Strong experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including schema design, query optimisation, and data integrity management.
• Experience with message queues, event-driven architectures, and distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience developing, deploying, and maintaining cloud-native applications on AWS .
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerised application environments.
• Experience with GitLab, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile software development methodologies.
• Good understanding of software architecture, design patterns, application security, and performance optimisation.
• Ability to independently investigate and resolve complex technical issues and contribute to backend solution design.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical teams.

Nice to Have

• Experience designing backend services for data-intensive applications, analytics platforms, or large-scale enterprise systems.
• Experience with application monitoring, observability, and performance optimisation.
• Exposure to real-time data processing, IoT integrations, or complex enterprise system integrations.
• Prior experience working on public sector or transport-related technology projects.
