Storage Administration – Interview Focus
1. What are the different types of storage protocols?
Block storage includes SAN, which can use protocols such as FC-SCSI, iSCSI, and FCoE.
File storage includes NAS, which commonly uses protocols such as NFS.
2. What is Storage Zoning and LUN Masking?
Storage zoning involves controlling communication between server ports and storage controllers through SAN switches.
LUN masking is the process of presenting a specific LUN to a particular host or group of hosts from the storage system.
3. What is the difference between LUN Cloning and LUN Snapshots?
A LUN clone is an exact copy of the source LUN and can consume storage space equivalent to the source.
A snapshot is a point-in-time representation of the source LUN that tracks changes using a copy-on-write mechanism. Snapshots depend on the original LUN, whereas clones can function as independent copies.
