Barista

Mercato & Company is an Italian market and café focused on authentic Italian products, specialty foods, espresso, wine, prepared foods, and genuine Italian hospitality.

Our café is built around traditional Italian espresso culture, quality ingredients, consistency, and professional customer service.

We are looking for an experienced Barista who is confident working with a traditional commercial espresso machine and grinder.

This position requires hands-on espresso experience. We are specifically looking for candidates with experience preparing espresso-based beverages manually, including proper espresso extraction, milk steaming, and drink preparation.

Responsibilities

• Prepare espresso, cappuccino, latte, macchiato, and other espresso-based beverages.
• Operate a traditional commercial espresso machine and grinder.
• Steam and texture milk properly and consistently.
• Maintain quality, speed, and consistency during service.
• Adjust and monitor espresso grind and extraction when necessary.
• Provide friendly and professional customer service.
• Operate the POS/register and process transactions accurately.
• Keep the espresso station, equipment, and café area clean and organized.
• Restock supplies and assist with opening and closing duties.
• Work closely with the rest of the team to ensure smooth daily operations.

Requirements

• Previous professional experience using a traditional/manual commercial espresso machine is required.
• Candidates whose experience is limited to fully automatic coffee systems may not meet the requirements for this position.
• Strong knowledge of espresso preparation and proper milk steaming.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Reliable, punctual, clean, and organized.
• Availability to work weekends and holidays is required.

Strong Plus

• Latte art skills are a major plus and can significantly increase starting pay depending on demonstrated skill level.
• Ability to dial in espresso and troubleshoot extraction.
• Knowledge of traditional Italian coffee preparation and culture.
• Knowledge of and passion for Italian food, products, and culture.
• Previous experience in an Italian café, specialty coffee shop, restaurant, or similar environment.
