Job Summary

The Matcha 116 and Matcha 108 team is expanding! We're soon opening a third location on Canal Street, our biggest space yet. We plan on offering coffee, matcha, and ice cream... on the first floor. We have a casual dress-code and baristas can play whatever music they want on the sound system. However, our standard for our product remains high: we import high-quality matcha from Uji in Kyoto, Japan, and many matcha enthusiasts visit our establishments expecting to drink exceptional and consistent matcha. Although we are not undertaking full matcha ceremonies every time a customer orders a drink, we do implement certain elements, especially the grace and cleanliness of the ritual.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and serve high-quality non-alcoholic beverages, including coffee, tea, and specialty drinks, ensuring consistency and presentation standards are met.
• Understand how to prepare and use tools and equipment for making drinks, especially those related to matcha and ice cream.
• Operate Square POS systems to process retail sales transactions accurately and efficiently.
• Engage with customers through friendly conversation, providing excellent customer service that enhances their overall experience.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the café area, including food handling, beverage stations, and seating areas, adhering to food safety standards.
• Manage cash handling duties by processing cash transactions, giving correct change, and balancing registers at shift end.
• Assist with inventory management by restocking supplies and monitoring product freshness.
• Support team members during busy periods by serving drinks quickly and efficiently while maintaining a positive attitude.

Qualifications

• Previous barista experience or food service background is preferred given that we're opening a new space with a layout and workflow that is completely different from our other locations; familiarity with café operations is a plus.
• Proficiency in using Square 's POS system for sales processing.
• Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and warmly with diverse guests.
• Knowledge of food safety practices and proper food handling procedures.
• Basic math skills for cash handling, making change, and balancing registers accurately.
• Excellent time management skills to prioritize tasks during high-volume periods.
• Ability to stand for extended periods, perform cleaning duties, and work in a fast-paced environment effectively.
• We are mainly looking for someone who exhibits a sense of teammanship, initiative, and urgency.

Training may be conducted at one of our first two locations (108 or 116) with one of the managers and could be scheduled immediately after accepting offer. Starting pay is $13.75 + tips.

Disclosure: Because the opening of a new location is dependent on many factors (like permits and inspections and other factors beyond our control), we cannot give an accurate timeline for starting at the new location. We are planning on opening on the first week of November, but this is tentative.

Pay: $13.75 - $17.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10.0 – 40.0 per week
