What they need
Battery Manufacturing Process Engineer
What this role is about
You will develop, implement, and continually refine scalable assembly processes for battery modules and battery packs. Your mission is to make production safe, efficient, repeatable, and faithful to engineering intent while supporting facility launch, ramp-to-volume, and long-term growth.
Where you sit
- Reports to: Director of Manufacturing
- Partners with: Production Supervisors and Operators; Product Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Thermal); Product Integration; Quality and EHS
- Primary focus: Process design, line support, and continuous improvement
A day in your week
- Walk the floor to support operators and supervisors, tackling process or equipment issues at the source.
- Update work instructions, visual aids, and standard work to reflect the latest drawings, BOMs, and approved changes.
- Join cross-functional huddles with Engineering, Quality, and EHS to align on priorities.
- Balance lines, adjust staffing assumptions, and remove bottlenecks as demand shifts.
- Lead or participate in focused improvement events aimed at cycle-time, yield, and ergonomics.
What you’ll own
Manufacturing process development
- Create end-to-end processes for battery module and battery pack assembly.
- Define flows, work content, and sequence to meet quality, throughput/takt, and safety/ergonomic objectives.
Standard work and instructions
- Author and maintain detailed work instructions, visuals, and standard work.
- Ensure alignment to current engineering drawings, BOMs, and revisions.
- Train production teams on new or updated procedures.
Equipment, tooling, and fixtures
- Specify, install, and support assembly tools/fixtures, test and inspection systems, and material-handling aids.
- Support commissioning and validation activities to release equipment to production.
Ramp and line support
- Enable initial line launch, volume acceleration, and new product/variant introductions.
- Serve as first responder to process issues and downtime; implement corrective actions to stabilize output.
Quality and process control
- Define in-process checks, error-proofing (poka‑yoke), and capability/control plans.
- Partner with Quality on root cause analysis and CAPA.
Engineering change and NPI
- Assess manufacturability impacts of design changes and update processes/instructions accordingly.
- Prepare lines for NPI, participate in pilot builds, and ensure smooth handoff from engineering to production.
Continuous improvement and cost
- Drive initiatives that lift yield, cut cycle time, improve labor efficiency, and reduce scrap/rework using lean methods.
Safety and ergonomics
- Design processes that comply with EHS requirements and safe work practices.
- Identify and mitigate ergonomic and safety risks in assembly and material movement.
Documentation, metrics, and reporting
- Maintain accurate process definitions, equipment settings, and change history.
- Track and report key process metrics to guide operational decisions.
Key deliverables
- Process flows and layouts for module/pack assembly
- Standard work, work instructions, and visual aids
- Specifications for equipment, tooling, and fixtures
- Documented improvement plans and realized results
- Inputs to production readiness and launch reviews
Authority and boundaries
- Authority to define and improve manufacturing processes
- No authority over product design decisions
- Obligation to escalate safety, quality, or capacity risks quickly
How success is measured
- Stable, repeatable processes
- Higher first-pass yield and fewer defects
- Throughput meeting or beating takt
- Reduced downtime and rework
- Effective NPI transitions
Why this work matters
- In batteries, tiny process misses can grow into major issues.
- Early instability erodes margins.
- Robust processes safeguard quality and safety.
Your work turns manufacturing from guesswork into a disciplined system—supporting predictable scaling and customer trust.
