Blight Elimination and Maintenance Assistant

Overview
Renew Birmingham is seeking a dependable and motivated Blight Elimination and Maintenance Assistant to support our community revitalization and property maintenance efforts. This position plays a vital role in neighborhood improvement through work performed under Renew Birmingham’s weed abatement contract with the City of Birmingham, as well as general maintenance and operational support.

Responsibilities

• Operate lawn and landscaping equipment (mowers, trimmers, blowers, etc.) to clear and maintain vacant lots assigned through the City of Birmingham weed abatement program.
• Perform routine groundskeeping and landscaping at Renew Birmingham properties.
• Assist with basic maintenance tasks, minor repairs, cleanup, and facility upkeep as directed.
• Follow all safety procedures, organizational policies, and city contract requirements.
• Load, unload, and properly store tools, equipment, and materials.
• Maintain equipment and report any maintenance or repair needs.
• Support Renew Birmingham operations with additional duties as needed, including community projects and event setup/cleanup.
• Represent Renew Birmingham professionally when interacting with community members and city representatives.

Qualifications

• Experience using lawn care or landscaping equipment preferred.
• Basic knowledge of property maintenance or groundskeeping.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong reliability, work ethic, and attention to detail.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred.
• Ideal candidate will be at least 26 years old and able to be insured by the organization.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and operate equipment for extended periods.
• Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, and other weather conditions.

Pay: $13.00 - $18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30.0 – 40.0 per week
