BOATMAN

Core Responsibilities

• Navigation & Operation: Pilot and steer boats safely across harbors Semporna coastal waters, maintaining proper headings and watching for hazards. For specialized roles like a Boatman-Steersman, you take complete charge of the vessel during sailing and diving operations.
• Passenger & Cargo Safety: Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, enforce safety rules, and manage emergency equipment.
• Maintenance & Upkeep: Perform routine engine checks, refuel, clean decks and hulls, check safety gear (like lifejackets), and troubleshoot minor mechanical issues.
• Docking & Mooring: Handle ropes, throw heaving lines, secure mooring lines, and manage docking procedures.

Key Skills & Requirements

• Mechanical & Seamanship Aptitude: Basic knowledge of marine engines, fuel systems, and line handling (knots and rigging).
• Local Waterway Knowledge: Familiarity with Semporna local tides, weather patterns, and maritime regulations.
• Certifications: Seaman Card & COC ; Depending on the region and vessel type, a valid boating license, local port authority clearance, or specific safety/seaman credentials may be required.
• Physical Stamina: Ability to work outdoors in changing weather conditions and perform physical deck work.
• Vocational & Practical Training: Many maritime jurisdictions require a 3-year vocational education or a specialized nautical/seamanship course (such as basic boat handling or an inland shipping service record).
• Sailing Time & Sea Days: Typically requires around 360 days of sailing time on inland vessels, or a combination of inland and sea/coastal days (often backed by an inland navigation service record book)
