What they need

Job Summary

Brooks Alliance is seeking an experienced Bookkeeping Manager to lead and fully manage our bookkeeping department. This person will directly manage a team of bookkeepers and will be accountable for their performance, workload, client assignments, deadlines, quality of work, and client service.

This is a hands-on leadership and client-facing position. The Bookkeeping Manager will own the client experience from onboarding through monthly financial reporting and year-end tax readiness. The goal is for this person to independently run the bookkeeping department without requiring daily involvement from the CEO.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and directly manage the bookkeeping team, including assigning clients, managing workload and capacity, training and coaching staff, reviewing performance, answering technical questions, and holding team members accountable for deadlines and quality.
  • Maintain visibility over every bookkeeping client and be able to report where each client stands, what is outstanding, who is responsible, and the next deadline.
  • Own the client lifecycle from onboarding and systems setup through monthly close, financial reporting, client meetings, and year-end tax readiness.
  • Review bookkeepers' work, reconciliations, general ledgers, and financial statements for accuracy before client delivery.
  • Conduct monthly client meetings to review P&L, Balance Sheet, cash flow, profitability, trends, and financial concerns.
  • Help clients understand their bookkeeping through both a financial and tax lens, identifying items that may affect cash flow, profitability, tax planning, or tax preparation.
  • Proactively identify issues that should be escalated to the CPA/tax team.
  • Ensure year-end books are complete, reconciled, properly documented, and tax ready.
  • Oversee bookkeeping cleanups, chart-of-accounts setup, new-client conversions, and accounting system implementations.
  • Maintain and improve bookkeeping SOPs, workflows, review procedures, and quality-control standards.
  • Provide leadership with clear reporting on client status, department deadlines, team capacity, outstanding items, and escalations.
  • Use technology, automation, and AI to improve accuracy, efficiency, client service, and department capacity.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of progressive bookkeeping/accounting experience
  • 3–5+ years managing a bookkeeping/accounting team with direct reports
  • Demonstrated experience supervising multiple bookkeepers and managing their client portfolios
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting
  • Strong ability to review P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow Statements and identify errors, inconsistencies, or unusual activity
  • Experience working with CPAs/tax preparers and producing tax-ready financials
  • Experience conducting monthly financial-review meetings with business owners
  • Strong understanding of small-business accounting, cash flow, profitability, and financial operations
  • Advanced experience with multiple accounting and financial systems, including QuickBooks Online, Xero, payroll, AP/AR, expense management, payment processing, e-commerce/POS, and financial reporting platforms
  • Experience using AI, automation, and system integrations to improve accounting workflows, efficiency, and accuracy
  • Strong Excel and/or Google Sheets skills
  • Experience managing multiple clients, employees, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously
  • Strong client-facing communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, follow-through, urgency, and accountability

Pay: $80,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Paid time off

Experience:

  • Bookkeeping: 7 years (Required)
  • managing a bookkeeping/accounting team: 3 years (Required)
