Building Maintenance Technician

SUMMARY

Performs a variety of semiskilled, skilled, technical duties and manual labor tasks to assist in the overall operation and maintenance of the city’s buildings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned by the Building Maintenance Superintendent that are appropriate to this job description.

• Routine cleaning duties such as, but not limited to sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, emptying trash, and other related cleaning duties.
• Identifies and reports building maintenance needs.
• Ensures buildings are secured at end of shift according to facility procedures.
• Adheres to safe working/driving practices and procedures.
• Operates a variety of basic hand and power tools.
• Assists with snow removal, including plowing, hand shoveling, and dispersing ice melting compounds as needed.
• Performs maintenance checks of all power equipment, including filters, fuel, lubrication, and traction.
• Follows assigned preventive maintenance schedule.
• Assists with a variety of general skilled trade duties as necessary.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY REQUIRED:

• Knowledge of department safety policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of maintenance and repair principles
• Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment.
• Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
• Skill in problem solving.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
• Ability to follow and deliver both verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to be tactful, courteous, and effective with the public and co-workers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• A high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
• Three to six months (3-6) related experience in industrial cleaning and/or training.
• Or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Must maintain a valid Driver’s License.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.
• May be subject to call-out and/or call-back.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

• The work is typically outdoors, occasionally in hot, cold, or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
