Department: Data Canter Operations / Facilities Management

Experience Required: 3–5 Years

Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Electrical, Controls Engineering, or a related field

1. Job Purpose

The BMS Engineer will be responsible for the design, configuration, integration, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of Building Management Systems (BMS) within mission-critical data center environments. The role involves monitoring and optimizing HVAC, cooling, electrical, and environmental control systems to ensure operational reliability, energy efficiency, safety, and uninterrupted data center operations.

The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience with BMS platforms, building automation, HVAC controls, communication protocols, and critical infrastructure systems.

2. Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, implement, integrate, and commission BMS solutions for data center infrastructure.
  • Monitor and manage HVAC systems, chillers, CRAH/CRAC units, cooling systems, UPS interfaces, and other critical facility equipment through BMS.
  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot BMS controllers and automation systems, including Siemens, Honeywell, Schneider Electric, and Tridium Niagara platforms.
  • Integrate BMS with HVAC, electrical monitoring, fire and life safety systems, and other data center infrastructure, as applicable.
  • Work with communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks, along with SCADA and building automation systems.
  • Monitor real-time alarms, system performance, environmental conditions, and critical incidents to maintain operational continuity.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance, fault diagnosis, root cause analysis, and system performance optimization.
  • Coordinate with data center operations, facilities, IT, security teams, vendors, and contractors to resolve technical issues.
  • Analyze BMS data and trends to identify opportunities for energy optimization, improved cooling efficiency, and Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).
  • Ensure compliance with applicable data center standards, operational procedures, SLAs, uptime requirements, and energy management guidelines.
  • Maintain technical documentation, including BMS architecture, control logic, as-built drawings, SOPs, maintenance records, and compliance reports.
  • Support BMS system upgrades, expansion projects, testing, commissioning, and integration of new equipment.
  • Train operations and facilities personnel on BMS operation, alarm management, troubleshooting, and emergency response procedures.
  • Follow applicable health, safety, environmental, and energy management requirements.

3. Required Technical Skills

  • Hands-on experience with Building Management Systems (BMS) and Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • Knowledge of BMS platforms such as Siemens Desigo, Honeywell EBI, Schneider Electric EcoStruxure, and Tridium Niagara.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC controls, chillers, CRAH/CRAC, AHUs, temperature and humidity monitoring, and cooling infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with electrical systems, UPS monitoring, power monitoring interfaces, and data center critical infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, and SCADA systems.
  • Understanding of data center operations, redundancy, alarms, monitoring, and uptime requirements.
  • Familiarity with data center standards and guidelines such as TIA-942 and ASHRAE TC 9.9.
  • Knowledge of energy management, sustainability, and PUE optimization.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, documentation, and communication skills.

4. Educational Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Instrumentation, or a related discipline.
  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in BMS engineering, building automation, controls, or facilities management.
  • Experience in data centers, mission-critical facilities, commercial buildings, hospitals, or other critical environments is preferred.
  • Practical experience in BMS configuration, controller programming, system integration, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting is desirable.

5. Preferred Certifications

  • Vendor-specific BMS training or certification in Siemens, Honeywell, Schneider Electric, or Tridium Niagara.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification is an advantage.
  • OSHA or equivalent occupational health and safety certification is preferred.

6. Key Competencies and Behavioral Skills

  • Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proactive approach to identifying risks and preventing system downtime.
  • High attention to detail in system configuration, monitoring, and documentation.
  • Ability to respond effectively to critical alarms and incidents in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Strong coordination and collaboration with facilities, engineering, IT, and vendor teams.
  • Adaptability, accountability, and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Interest in emerging BMS technologies, automation, and energy-efficient data center operations.

7. Preferred Candidate Profile

Candidates with hands-on experience in BMS Engineering, Building Automation, HVAC Controls, and Data Center Facilities Operations will be preferred. Experience with Siemens, Honeywell, Schneider Electric, or Tridium Niagara systems, along with BACnet/Modbus integration and mission-critical cooling infrastructure, will be particularly relevant.
