Building Plan Examiner

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the building officials, this position is responsible for reviewing all residential building applications, plans and specifications; assists in reviewing commercial applications, plans and specifications. This position is also responsible for reviewing individual permit applications and plans related to signs, solar panels and generators.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED equivalent is required. A minimum of 5 years of experience is required in a building code enforcement, building plan review or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Special Requirements:

Must have, or be able to obtain within one year, an International Code Council (ICC) certification as one of the following: Residential Building Inspector, Residential Plans Examiner or other ICC certification of equal hierarchy. Must be proficient in computer software such as, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and building department software.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of and ability to interpret the International Code Council family of codes.
• Ability to read and understand construction plans and specifications.
• Ability to provide the highest level of customer service to the building and citizen community.
• Ability to coordinate the issuance of residential building permits in accordance with set procedures.
• Ability to complete multiple tasks under pressure without sacrificing quality.
• Skill in technical and professional writing.
• Ability to keep records, express ideas clearly, work independently of direct supervision and establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and collaborative partners.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is sedentary and requires the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: fingering, grasping, hearing, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motions, speaking, talking and visual acuity.
