We’re building tomorrow’s fleet today

With more than 11,000 employees, HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi and a major contributor to the economic growth of Alabama. For nearly 85 years, we’ve designed, built and maintained amphibious ships, destroyers, and cutters for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. The largest supplier of U.S. Navy surface combatants, we’re simultaneously building four classes of ships and have pioneered the development and production of technologically advanced, highly capable ships for the surface Navy fleet for decades. Think that’s cool? Keep reading:

The Role

Precision. Power. Craftsmanship. Become a Burner.

Do you have the skill and focus required to cut, shape, and prepare metal that becomes part of the most advanced naval vessels in the world? Ingalls Shipbuilding is seeking Skilled Burners who take pride in high‑accuracy metal cutting, layout, and fabrication support.

As a Burner, you will read and interpret blueprints, determine the correct cutting methods, and operate burning equipment to prepare steel components used throughout the ship. Your work helps create the foundations, structures, and assemblies that define every vessel we build.

If you're ready to apply your burning and layout expertise at “America’s Shipyard,” a rewarding career at Ingalls Shipbuilding — Mississippi’s largest private employer — is waiting.

What You Can Earn

  • Earn up to $35.99 per hour, based on experience and qualifications

  • Opportunities for overtime and long‑term career advancement

What You’ll Do

  • Lay out work from blueprints, sketches, templates, and verbal instructions

  • Position, align, and secure workpieces prior to cutting

  • Determine the proper cutting method, equipment, and sequence of operations

  • Operate burning tools and equipment to cut steel plates, shapes, and components

  • Inspect cuts and ensure accuracy according to drawings and specifications

  • Work in shipyard environments that may involve heights, confined spaces, and varying weather conditions

  • Support production needs across multiple shifts in a 24/7 industrial environment

  • Follow Ingalls’ strong safety procedures in every workspace

Why This Work Matters

Burners shape the ship. Your precision in cutting and preparing steel ensures that every component fits, aligns, and performs as designed — supporting the strength, safety, and mission‑readiness of vessels that operate around the world.

What You Bring

  • Experience operating burning equipment and working with steel or plate materials

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and layout instructions

  • Strong understanding of cutting methods, sequencing, and fabrication practices

  • Commitment to safety, accuracy, and craftsmanship

  • Willingness to work in an active industrial environment supporting ship construction

Must Have

Minimum of 1 year of experience as a burner. Must be able to pass a skill assessment test.

Nice to Have

Three to five years of shipboard or industrial experience as a burner. High school diploma or equivalent
