Job Summary
Bernard Berger Ltd operates two busy convenience stores in Oldham. We are seeking a commercially focused Business Development Manager to identify growth opportunities, increase sales and improve the overall performance of both stores.
The successful candidate will develop promotions, review customer and market trends, introduce suitable products and services, and maintain relationships with suppliers and local organisations. The role will also include purchasing products from wholesalers and cash-and-carry outlets when required. As this is a hands-on retail position, the employee may occasionally be required to support customers and operate the till.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement business-development plans to increase sales, customer numbers and profitability across both stores.
Review the commercial performance of each store and identify practical opportunities for growth and improvement.
Research local customer needs, shopping habits, competitor activity and emerging retail trends.
Identify new products, services, suppliers and business opportunities suitable for the stores.
Build and maintain productive relationships with wholesalers, cash-and-carry operators, suppliers, local businesses and community organisations.
Negotiate product discounts, promotional support and improved commercial terms with suppliers.
Purchase products from wholesalers, cash-and-carry outlets and other approved suppliers when required.
Plan and coordinate in-store promotions, seasonal offers, product launches and customer-engagement campaigns.
Develop promotions for festivals, holidays, local events and other important trading periods.
Ensure promotions are displayed correctly and consistently across both stores.
Coordinate promotional stock requirements with suppliers, store managers and the purchasing function.
Review product ranges and recommend changes based on customer demand, sales performance and profitability.
Identify new product categories and services that could generate additional revenue.
Support local advertising, social media activity and community engagement to increase awareness of the stores.
Develop customer-retention initiatives that encourage repeat visits and improve customer loyalty.
Monitor sales figures and evaluate the performance of promotions, products and business-development activities.
Gather customer feedback and use it to improve products, services and the overall shopping experience.
Work with store teams to improve product displays, promotional areas and point-of-sale materials.
Maintain awareness of competitor prices, promotions, product ranges and customer-service standards.
Ensure business-development and promotional activities comply with relevant retail, pricing, advertising and age-restriction requirements.
Assist customers and operate the till during busy periods, staff shortages or other operational requirements.
Prepare reports for senior management covering sales growth, promotional performance, new opportunities and planned activities.

Good sales, negotiation and relationship-building abilities.
Ability to plan and manage retail promotions.
Strong understanding of customer needs and local market trends.

Equivalent professional training or relevant practical experience will also be considered.
A valid UK driving licence is desirable because the role may involve travelling between stores, suppliers and cash-and-carry outlets.
