Business Development Representative (BDR) – Outbound Telephone Sales

Company: Northern Valve & Fitting Company Limited (NVFCL)
Location: Leigh, Greater Manchester
Salary: £26,000–£30,000 per annum, depending on experience
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

About the Role

Northern Valve & Fitting Company Limited (NVFCL) is seeking a confident, enthusiastic and motivated Business Development Representative (BDR) to join our growing sales team.

We are particularly interested in candidates with previous call centre, outbound telesales, telephone-based customer service or business development experience.

This is a proactive, telephone-led position where you will spend a substantial proportion of your working day contacting customers, following up outstanding quotations, developing business relationships and identifying new sales opportunities.

We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys speaking with customers, is comfortable making a high volume of outbound calls and has the confidence, resilience and determination to maintain consistent telephone activity throughout the working day.

This is not an administration-based sales role. The telephone will be your primary working tool, and you will be expected to achieve a minimum of 25 meaningful, connected customer calls each working day.

Previous engineering or technical product knowledge is not essential, as full product and industry training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Make proactive outbound telephone calls to existing customers, prospective customers and relevant business contacts throughout the working day.
  • Achieve a minimum of 25 meaningful, connected customer calls per working day.
  • Follow up outstanding quotations to establish customer requirements, purchasing intentions, project timescales and next steps.
  • Build and maintain strong professional relationships with customers across an assigned sales area.
  • Identify new enquiries, upcoming projects and potential commercial opportunities.
  • Re-engage existing customers whose purchasing activity or contact has reduced.
  • Identify additional contacts, departments and potential product users within customer organisations.
  • Promote relevant company products and services to generate additional sales opportunities.
  • Respond professionally and promptly to incoming customer enquiries.
  • Accurately record customer conversations, quotation updates and follow-up activities within the company's HubSpot CRM system.
  • Schedule and complete customer follow-up tasks to ensure enquiries and quotations are progressed.
  • Work closely with internal sales, technical and operational colleagues to provide excellent customer service.
  • Contribute towards customer retention, sales growth and achievement of the assigned area's sales objectives.

What We're Looking For

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience in a telephone-based customer service, sales or customer-facing role involving regular telephone communication.
  • Confidence and enthusiasm when making proactive outbound customer calls.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A professional, positive and engaging telephone manner.
  • Ability to build rapport and maintain strong customer relationships.
  • A proactive approach to work, with the confidence to initiate telephone conversations without being prompted.
  • Resilience and determination when dealing with objections, unsuccessful calls or customer rejection.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Confidence using computers and maintaining accurate customer records.
  • Ability to work towards daily activity targets and manage competing priorities.
  • A reliable, self-motivated and customer-focused attitude.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience working in a call centre or contact centre.
  • Outbound telesales or telephone-based business development.
  • Experience working in a target-driven telephone sales environment.
  • B2B sales, customer relationship management or account management.
  • Experience following up quotations, enquiries or sales opportunities.
  • Experience using CRM software, particularly HubSpot.
  • Experience within engineering, manufacturing or industrial distribution.

Engineering or technical sales experience is not essential. We are primarily interested in candidates with excellent telephone skills, the right attitude and the motivation to develop strong customer relationships.

Telephone Activity & Performance Expectations

The telephone is the primary tool used by our Business Development Representatives to develop customer relationships and progress sales opportunities.

You will be expected to spend a substantial proportion of each working day making proactive outbound customer calls.

The minimum daily activity target is 25 connected customer calls.

A connected call is defined as a meaningful conversation with a customer or relevant business contact. Unanswered calls, voicemails, unsuccessful dial attempts and emails do not count towards this target.

Every customer conversation should have a clear purpose and, wherever possible, result in an agreed next action.

Email communication is used to support telephone conversations, confirm information and provide follow-up, rather than replacing direct customer contact.

We value the quality of customer conversations alongside the quantity of calls made.

What We Offer

  • Annual salary of £26,000–£30,000, depending on experience.
  • Full-time, permanent employment.
  • Comprehensive product and industry training.
  • Support from an experienced sales and technical team.
  • Opportunities to develop commercial, sales and customer relationship skills.
  • Experience working with customers across engineering, manufacturing, energy, hydrogen and other specialist industries.
  • Career development opportunities within an established and growing business.
  • A professional and supportive working environment.

About NVFCL

As an authorised UK distributor for FITOK, we support customers across a wide range of industries, including engineering, manufacturing, energy, hydrogen and specialist industrial applications.

Important Information for Applicants

Please ensure you are comfortable spending a substantial proportion of your working day making outbound telephone calls before applying for this position.

This is a telephone-intensive business development role, not a predominantly administrative or email-based position.

We are looking for someone who enjoys speaking with customers, is confident initiating conversations, takes pride in achieving activity targets and is motivated by developing business relationships.

If you have previous call centre, outbound telesales or telephone-based customer service experience and are looking for an opportunity to develop your career in business development, we would welcome your application.

Apply today to join the NVFCL sales team.
