What they need
Business Development Representative (Part-Time)
Frederick Interpreting Agency | Frederick, MD | Hybrid - field visits plus remote work | 15-20 hours per week
Frederick Interpreting Agency is a Deaf-owned language services company based in Frederick, MD. We provide ASL and spoken-language interpreting and document translation to healthcare, legal, education and government clients across the region. We are hiring a part-time Business Development Representative to put our name in front of more local organizations and to grow our interpreter network.
About the role
The job is about half field work and half desk work, and both halves matter.
In the field, you visit hospitals and clinics, school systems, county and city offices, law firms, senior living communities and nonprofits across Frederick County, Washington County (Hagerstown) and Montgomery County. You introduce our services, leave flyers and service menus with the right people, and build relationships with the staff who make vendor decisions - ADA coordinators, language services managers, disability services directors, HR and procurement. You also represent us at chamber events, business expos, health fairs and community gatherings, and keep our materials stocked at libraries, senior centers and clinics where people go looking for an interpreter.
At the desk, from home or wherever you like to work, you research organizations and find the right person to contact, make outreach calls, write and send follow-up emails, and work through vendor registration and onboarding paperwork with counties, hospitals and school systems. That last piece is a real part of the job: most of our largest potential clients cannot buy from us until we are an approved vendor in their system, and the applications take persistence and attention to detail. You will also keep our CRM current and plan your own routes and schedule.
A second part of the role is interpreter recruiting. We are always looking for qualified ASL and spoken-language interpreters, and you help us find them through local associations, college interpreting programs, Deaf community events, job fairs and direct outreach.
This suits someone who is comfortable both introducing themselves to a stranger at a front desk and spending a focused afternoon on the phone and in a spreadsheet. Sales experience helps but is not required. We train you on our services and go with you on your first visits so you can get comfortable.
What you will do
Field marketing and outreach
- Make scheduled and drop-in visits to clinics, school systems, government offices, law firms and nonprofits across the three-county territory
- Place and restock flyers, service menus and business cards at front desks and community hubs
- Staff our table at chamber events, expos, health fairs and community gatherings
- Build and maintain relationships with referral partners - disability offices, senior living activity directors, libraries, community organizations
- Book introductory meetings between decision makers and our owner or lead interpreter
Research, outreach and vendor registration
- Research organizations and identify the right decision maker before making contact
- Make outreach and follow-up calls; write and send follow-up emails
- Complete vendor registrations and supplier onboarding with counties, hospitals, school systems and state portals, and track each application through to approval
- Prepare and submit the documents these applications require (certifications, insurance certificates, W-9s, references)
- Monitor bid boards and procurement portals for interpreting and language services opportunities
- Log every visit, call and next step in our CRM the same day
- Send a short weekly summary of activity, leads and upcoming events
Interpreter recruiting
- Attend interpreter association meetings, college interpreting program events and job fairs
- Reach out to working interpreters and connect them to our onboarding process
What success looks like in the first 90 days
- A working target list with the right contact named for each organization
- 6-10 in-person visits a week on a planned route, with same-day follow-up
- FIA registered as an approved vendor with the county governments, hospitals and school systems on your list
- Introductory meetings booked with decision makers at hospitals, school systems and county offices
- First new accounts opened and first recruited interpreters completing assignments
Qualifications
- Comfortable introducing yourself to new people, including unscheduled visits, and equally comfortable working the phone and email
- Organized and detail-oriented enough to carry a multi-step vendor application through to approval without being reminded
- Able to plan a week of routes and follow-ups independently
- Comfortable with email, spreadsheets, online research and a CRM
- Clear written communication - much of our internal communication happens in writing
- Reliable transportation, a valid driver's license and current auto insurance
- Able to set up a table, banner and materials at events
- Available for occasional evening or weekend events
Helpful but not required. You do not need to know ASL or have any background in interpreting to do this job well, and we do not expect applicants to have it. If you do, it is a genuine plus - knowledge of ASL, experience interpreting, or familiarity with the Deaf community all help you connect faster with the people we serve. So does experience in outreach, sales, field marketing, recruiting or government contracting, or a second language, especially Spanish. Apply if none of these describe you.
Pay and schedule
$22.00-$28.00 per hour based on experience, plus commission on new client accounts you bring in and a bonus for each interpreter you recruit who completes a first assignment with us. Mileage is reimbursed at the IRS rate, and we cover all materials, business cards and event fees.
This is a part-time position, 15-20 hours per week to start, with flexibility on which days and hours you work. There is room for the role to grow as the territory grows. Part-time employees at this hours level are not eligible for our health, dental or vision plans.
We are a small, close team and the owner is Deaf, so clear written communication is part of how we work every day. If you would like to learn some ASL, we are happy to teach you.
