What they need

About the Role

FreightOptics helps shippers control freight costs. Data is at the center of everything we do, and the BI Engineer helps turn raw, multi-source data into the insights that drive decisions across our business and for our customers.

This role spans both ends of the analytics pipeline: the data-engineering side that brings data together and shapes it, and the reporting side that puts it in front of decision-makers.

It’s a hands-on, growth-oriented role for an early-career engineer who already has some real production experience and wants to broaden it.

What You’ll Do

Data Integration & Engineering

  • Data extraction and integration - Pull data from diverse sources including databases, APIs, JSON and flat files, spreadsheets, EDI feeds, and third-party or carrier systems, and help combine it into a central repository.
  • Structured data formats - Work with EDI transaction data and JSON payloads from carriers and partners - interpreting their structure, validating incoming files, handling nested and semi-structured data, and mapping it all into usable, analysis-ready tables.
  • Data modeling & warehousing - Build and maintain data models, schemas, and curated datasets optimized for analytical processing, using dimensional modeling practices that support consistent KPI reporting.
  • Platform support - Help maintain the data platform, pipelines, and dataflows that power reporting across the organization.

Reporting, Visualization & Delivery

  • Report & dashboard development - Build and iterate Power BI reports, dashboards, and semantic models with clean visual and UX design that make data easy to read, explore, and act on.
  • Requirements gathering - Work with stakeholders to understand reporting needs and translate business questions into useful reports and KPIs.
  • Customer portal reporting - Prototype reporting for our customer-facing platform and prepare clear specifications, data logic, and measures for our development team to build into the product.
  • Metric consistency - Apply agreed metric definitions consistently across reports and help reconcile differences when numbers don’t line up.

Process Improvement & Automation

  • Process improvement - Identify and automate manual data processes to improve reliability, speed, and repeatability.
  • Applied AI - Use AI tools and models to accelerate development work such as code drafting, documentation, and exploratory analysis. Equally important, know when not to use AI. Recognizing when a problem is better solved with deterministic, coded logic.
  • Internal tools - Help build lightweight applications and tools that support internal business workflows outside of our core product.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory analysis.
  • Create proofs of concept for new approaches, tools, and data sources.
  • Train business users on dashboard usage and self-service reporting best practices.
  • Share practical AI techniques with teammates and help raise the team’s overall AI fluency.
  • Contribute ideas to the team’s data strategy and roadmap.

What You’ll BringEducation & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • 1–2 years of professional, hands-on business intelligence, analytics engineering, or data engineering experience.
  • Nice to have - Exposure to freight, logistics, or transportation data.

Technical

  • Strong SQL, including joins, aggregations, window functions, and an understanding of query performance.
  • Demonstrated experience building reports and dashboards in Power BI (or an equivalent platform) for non-technical audiences.
  • Working knowledge of data modeling concepts.
  • Programming/scripting ability in Python (or equivalent) for transformation, automation, and data validation.
  • Experience working with structured and semi-structured data - including JSON, APIs, flat files, and databases.
  • Working knowledge of EDI or similar structured data-interchange formats, including how transactions are structured and how to validate and map them.
  • Applied AI judgment - Practical experience using AI tools or models (any provider), paired with the judgment to know when AI is the right approach and when coded logic is better.

Professional

  • Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain data concepts to business audiences.
  • Organized and self-directed, comfortable asking questions and learning quickly.
  • Able to partner with stakeholders across the business and manage competing requests.

Pay: $55,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • 401(k)
  • Dental insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Life insurance
