Business System Analyst

Role Summary

The Business Systems Analyst (BSA) turns operational problems into working systems. The role gathers and documents business requirements, designs the solution, builds it on Microsoft Power Platform and Power BI, tests it, and takes it into production.

BSAs work across two workstreams: Protocols — formal process documentation that governs how the business operates — and Automation and Business Systems — Power BI reporting, Power Apps, Power Automate, and AI automation.

Reporting and Scope

Reports to the BSA Lead. The BSA is the developer: depending on the engagement, the same person acts as Power BI developer, Power Platform developer, or back-end developer. There is no separate build team to hand work off to. The BSA is also the person who documents interdepartmental and team processes, known internally as protocols, from discovery through to publication. Supports stakeholders up to executive level.

This is a full-time, work-from-home position with a night shift schedule.

Core Responsibilities

Protocols workstream

• Draft protocol documents from stakeholder requirements, following the approved structure.
• Facilitate stakeholder review sessions; capture and document feedback and agreed actions.
• Finalize and version-control drafts, run the standard AI executive review prompt, and revise.
• Secure stakeholder sign-off, then coordinate senior management review and apply executive feedback.
• Publish the approved protocol and run enablement or training so users can actually follow it.

Automation and Business Systems workstream

• Build Power BI reports and semantic models: data connections, transformations, DAX measures, visuals, and filters.
• Configure Power BI dataflows, including Python-based source connections and incremental refresh.
• Build Power Apps applications on SharePoint or Dataverse backends, with Power Automate flows behind them.
• Build Power Automate integrations: triggers, source-to-destination field mapping, transformation logic, upsert handling, error handling, retries, notifications, and run logging.
• Use ChatGPT, Claude, and similar tools to work out automations: scope the approach, generate and refine the logic, and validate the output.
• Build AI automation: AI-driven document handling, data extraction, and review steps embedded into delivery workflows.
• Write the 2-page BRD and 3-page TDD for every engagement, using the standard templates.
• Complete the standard test plan and attach testing evidence to the work item.
• Peer-review other analysts’ work, including verifying their test evidence.

Across both workstreams

• Manage own work in Azure DevOps: features, tasks, estimated hours, and status.
• Participate in agile ceremonies: sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.

The Delivery Lifecycle You Own

Every Automation engagement runs the same seven stages, and the BSA owns all of them:

Requirements Gathering → Analysis & Design → Development & Unit Testing → Functional / Regression Testing → User Acceptance Testing → Deployment → Post-Deployment Monitoring

Protocols follow a parallel path: draft, stakeholder review, finalize, AI executive review, stakeholder approval, senior management review, publish and enable.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Business, or a related field.
• 3+ years in business systems analysis, business analysis, or a comparable hands-on build-and-document role.
• Demonstrated ability to write clear BRDs, technical design documents, and test plans without hand-holding.
• Working proficiency in Power BI: data modeling, Power Query, DAX, report design, workspace and refresh configuration.
• Working proficiency in Power Platform: Power Apps, Power Automate, SharePoint lists or Dataverse as a backend.
• Comfortable running requirements sessions directly with business stakeholders, including senior ones.
• Experience working in Azure DevOps or an equivalent work-tracking and source-control environment.
• Strong written English; the role produces documents that executives read.

Preferred Qualifications

• Python for data extraction and API integration.
• Power BI dataflows with incremental refresh; gateway and service-account configuration.
• Experience in a regulated or compliance-driven environment.
• Hands-on use of ChatGPT, Claude, or comparable tools to design and build working automations.
