What they need

Role Title: Cable Jointer

Role Purpose

To install, joint, terminate, commission, maintain and repair HV and LV underground distribution cables and associated equipment in accordance with NERS requirements, adopting utility specifications and company procedures.

The role ensures HV and LV works within the company’s accredited NERS scope are completed safely, to the required technical and quality standards, and in a manner that supports continued NERS accreditation.

Scope of Role

The Cable Jointer undertakes HV and LV jointing activities within the company’s NERS accreditation, including new connections, diversions, substation terminations, fault repairs and maintenance on contestable networks.

Work must be carried out in accordance with company safety rules, permits, sanctions and other applicable safety documents, working closely with Authorised Persons, Control Engineers, supervisors and, where applicable, NERS Authorising and Assessing Officers.

Key Responsibilities

The Cable Jointer is responsible for:

  • Carrying out cable jointing and termination work safely, correctly and in accordance with approved procedures, specifications and manufacturer instructions.
  • Identifying and checking cables, accessories, materials, tools and equipment before and during work.
  • Preparing and completing joints, terminations and connections to the required technical and workmanship standards.
  • Ensuring correct cable identification, phasing, preparation, connection details and protection of completed work.
  • Supporting testing, commissioning, inspection and energisation activities as required.
  • Coordinating with supervisors, fitters, civils teams, project managers, Authorised Persons and commissioning personnel to ensure work is completed safely and in the correct sequence.
  • Promptly reporting defects, damage, drawing discrepancies, access issues, unsafe conditions or other concerns before work proceeds.

Technical and Site Responsibilities

The Cable Jointer must understand and correctly apply the cable systems, jointing methods, termination arrangements and site controls relevant to the work undertaken.

This includes following drawings, cable schedules, specifications, work packs, jointing instructions, test requirements and manufacturer guidance.

Work may include mains, services, terminations, link boxes, pillars, substations, feeder equipment and associated apparatus, subject to the individual’s competence and authorisation.

Under NERS, cable jointing is a craftsperson activity. Live LV jointing and network connection activities require the appropriate additional competence, scope, authorisation and procedural controls and are not automatically included within a general jointing role.

Safety, Health, Environment and Quality

All work must comply with company and client safety rules, permits, risk assessments, method statements, isolation controls and adopting utility or site-specific requirements.

The Cable Jointer must maintain safe working practices around live networks, excavations, confined work areas, cable identification, plant interfaces and existing assets, and correctly use and maintain PPE, insulated tools, test equipment and calibrated equipment where required.

Workmanship must meet the required quality standards, including correct preparation and use of accessories, clean jointing practices, accurate identification and protection of completed work. Defects and non-conformances must be reported promptly and rectified before work proceeds where required.

Documentation and Communication

The Cable Jointer must complete or support accurate records, including as applicable:

  • Work packs, permits and jointing records.
  • Test sheets and commissioning information.
  • Red-line drawings and as-laid information.
  • Defect records, photographs and handover documentation.

Technical issues, safety concerns, access constraints, material requirements and progress must be clearly communicated to supervisors and relevant project personnel.

For NERS-accredited work, duties and competency records must reflect the activities actually undertaken, with appropriate competence, qualification, passport and authorisation evidence maintained and available for audit or site verification.

Competence, Training and Authorisation

The Cable Jointer must work strictly within their assessed competence, training and authority and must not undertake activities, voltage levels or network operations for which they have not been appropriately trained, assessed and authorised.

Relevant trade qualifications, training, refresher learning and practical experience must be maintained for the cable systems and network environments involved.

Under NERS, Cable Jointers are classed as craftspersons. New or returning craftspersons are expected to complete relevant training and assessment, ideally leading to NVQ Level 2 or equivalent, unless suitable current training, adopting utility authorisations and evidence of recent relevant experience are held.

Before undertaking work under the scheme, competence must be appropriately assessed and authorised in accordance with NERS requirements, with the necessary competence certification or compliant competency recording system and passport records maintained.

The Cable Jointer must participate in ongoing competence assessments and periodic reassessments led by NERS Assessing and Authorising Officers or other competent persons and complete any identified development, training or additional supervision requirements.
