At Chalfant, we're not just building products—we’re building a better future for our customers, our communities, and our team.

Job Summary/Purpose: The Draftsperson develops and maintains accurate 2D manufacturing drawings and 3D SolidWorks models for cable tray systems, fittings, components, tooling, and related products. This role supports Product Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Product Management by translating engineering requirements into production-ready documentation.

Key Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Create and revise 3D parts, assemblies, and detailed 2D drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Prepare manufacturing drawings with dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, weld details, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Develop drawings for aluminum and steel ladder cable tray, wire mesh tray, fittings, accessories, and production tooling.
  • Maintain drawing revisions, part numbers, document control records, and engineering change documentation.
  • Coordinate with engineering, production, quality, and purchasing to resolve manufacturability and drawing issues.
  • Review existing designs for accuracy, standardization, material usage, and fabrication efficiency.
  • Support prototype development, shop-floor troubleshooting, and verification of as-built dimensions.

Required Qualifications/Experience:

  • At least 2 years of hands-on professional experience using SolidWorks for 3D modeling and 2D drafting.
  • Proficiency in creating parts, assemblies, detailed drawings, and BOMs in SolidWorks.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and manufacturing specifications.
  • Working knowledge of fabrication processes such as cutting, punching, bending, and welding.
  • Associate degree or technical training in drafting, mechanical design, engineering technology, or equivalent relevant experience.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Experience in a metal fabrication or manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with sheet metal and structural aluminum or steel components.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, engineering change control, and drawing/document management.
  • Experience with cable tray systems, SolidWorks PDM, or ERP item/BOM maintenance.

Competencies/Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy.
  • Clear communication and ability to collaborate with engineering and production teams.
  • Strong organization, time management, and ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Practical problem-solving and understanding of design for manufacturability.

Technology and Equipment:

  • SolidWorks (required); 2D CAD and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Engineering drawing standards, measuring tools, and document-control systems.
  • ERP and/or product data management systems as applicable.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Primarily office-based computer work with periodic visits to an active manufacturing floor.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and occasionally handle or inspect parts and measuring tools.
  • Must follow required shop safety practices and wear appropriate PPE when on the production floor.

Travel Requirements:

  • Minimal travel required. Occasional travel may be necessary for meetings, training, conferences, or business-related events.
