Café Assistant

Job Summary

North Star Restaurant is seeking a friendly and dependable Café Assistant to support daily café operations and provide excellent customer service. The successful candidate will welcome customers, take orders, prepare and serve refreshments, process payments, and maintain clean, organised dining and service areas.

Job Description

• Welcome customers and provide friendly, professional service.
• Take food and drink orders accurately and answer basic menu enquiries.
• Prepare and serve hot and cold beverages according to café procedures.
• Assist with preparing simple food items, snacks, and light meals.
• Serve orders promptly and check they meet customer requests.
• Operate the till or point-of-sale system and process payments accurately.
• Handle cash, card, and contactless transactions where required.
• Replenish cups, cutlery, napkins, condiments, and other service supplies.
• Clear tables and keep customer seating areas clean and tidy.
• Wash dishes, utensils, and café equipment as required.
• Maintain cleanliness in food preparation areas and behind the counter.
• Store food and ingredients safely and follow stock rotation procedures.
• Follow food hygiene, allergen awareness, and health and safety requirements.
• Communicate with kitchen and café colleagues to support efficient service.
• Report stock shortages, equipment problems, or customer concerns to a supervisor.
• Assist with opening, closing, and other duties as required.

Qualifications

• Previous café, restaurant, retail, or customer service experience is beneficial but not essential.
• Good communication and customer service skills.
• A friendly, approachable, and professional attitude.
• Basic numeracy skills and confidence handling payments.
• Willingness to learn beverage preparation and food service procedures.
• Good teamwork and organisational skills.
• Attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
• Ability to work efficiently during busy periods.
• Understanding of basic food hygiene practices or willingness to learn.
• Reliable, punctual, and responsible approach to work.
• Flexibility to work shifts, including weekends and bank holidays where required.

Pay: £15.00-£27.00 per hour

Expected hours: 37.0 per week
