With indoor seating for around 35-40 people and outdoor terraces offering extra seating, there is plenty of space to enjoy our offerings. The café operates year-round, from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM, seven days a week, with reduced hours (five days a week) during the winter months.

The Role:
As a Supervisor, you will report to the Café Manager and be responsible for ensuring the café is prepared and ready to open each day. Your duties will include supervising Café Assistants and volunteers (including individuals with disabilities who gain work experience alongside their carers), maintaining excellent customer service, overseeing health and safety practices, ensuring cleanliness, and managing the café’s closing procedures at the end of the day.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • GENERAL TASKS:
  • Open up and prepare the premises for service at the start of the day
  • Brief the staff/volunteers, as required, on the day’s activities
  • Ensure sufficient stocks of all food and drinks are available at the point of sale at the start of the day and replenished as required
  • Stock control and rotation; advising the Café Manager when new stock needs to be ordered; checking and storing deliveries on arrival
  • Operate the ‘Suprema’ coffee machine along with selected, trained, staff and volunteers
  • Clean and close the premises securely at the end of the day
  • FOOD SAFETY:
  • Ensure that all Health and Safety and Food Hygiene standards are met, throughout the day
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out in accordance with the Café Operating and ‘Safer Foods Better Business’ Manuals
  • Ensure that all set up, close down and other checks are performed and documented
  • CUSTOMER SERVICE
  • Provide a welcoming and friendly service to customers, and ensure staff and volunteers do likewise
  • Ensure that all food and drinks are prepared and served to the highest standards
  • FINANCE
  • Prepare the till/card reader at the start of the day (cash float etc.)
  • Record the takings at the end of the day and store the cash securely
  • Ensure that paid staff complete accurate Weekly Timesheets
  • TRAINING
  • Provide on-the-job training to new staff and volunteers and ensure that staff training records are completed
  • MAINTENANCE AND SECURITY
  • Ensure that all the equipment in use is operating safely and efficiently and report any problems to the Operations Director
  • CLEANING
  • Ensure all cleaning/sanitising tasks are performed and, if necessary, recorded
  • Ensure all areas in use inside and outside the café premises are regularly checked and kept clean and tidy (e.g. tables cleared, no litter)
  • Ensure all non-recyclable waste bins (including those outside the premises) are emptied when full and the bags placed in the general waste bin for collection
  • Ensure that recyclable waste is separated and placed in the recycling bin in the yard for collection

This list is not exhaustive and the postholder is expected to assist in other reasonable duties as required. The job description may be subject to change, following consultation, to meet the needs of the Trust.

THE FACILITY

Portishead Open Air Pool is run by a charity (Portishead Pool Community Trust – “the Trust”) who took on the management of the pool in 2009, after North Somerset Council drew up plans to close it. Café Lido, which adjoins the pool, is a separate trading entity the profits of which support the running of the pool. The Trust has increased annual swimmer numbers from under 10,000 before 2009 to around 40,000 or more each year, and it is committed to further growth. Estimated Café Lido visitor numbers are in the region of 35,000 per year. The pool receives no regular subsidy from the public purse. It is funded primarily from the sale of swim tickets and income from Cafe Lido. There is a staff team of around 30 during peak season, across the café and lifeguard teams, and the trust benefits from a considerable number of volunteers who take on a variety of roles year-round. The site is situated in a stunning position on Portishead Esplanade, and benefits from considerable local community support as well as attracting visitors from much further away. It retains a strong media profile and is well connected to the wider UK lido network.

The pool opens for heated swimming from April to October (and over Christmas and New Year) and opens on a reduced hours basis for cold water swimming from October to April. Café Lido is open throughout the year – every day in Summer and 5 days per week from October to April.
