Can Making Technician

About the role

As a Can Making Technician you would work as part of the Production team and would be responsible for running the production line including setting up machinery, preparing raw materials and ensuring high quality products are produced to our production standards. Reporting directly to the Production Supervisor, your responsibilities will include ensuring the highest standards of operational performance and quality are achieved, meeting our production targets, and exceeding our customer's expectations.

Key responsibilities

• Manufacture metal cans and components, in accordance with production orders and specifications.
• Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on machinery, to ensure optimal performance and safety.
• Carry out production changeovers in line with scheduled production plans.
• Inspect in-process and finished cans against drawings, SOPs, and quality standards, completing all required quality checks and documentation.
• Identify, investigate, and rectify quality defects and process issues, taking immediate action to minimise waste and downtime.
• Monitor material usage, implementing corrective measures to meet waste and efficiency targets.
• Manufacture products strictly in accordance with production orders and report any discrepancies or technical oversights affecting outcomes.
• Apply welding, fitting, and adjustment techniques to ensure correct assembly, sealing, and structural integrity of cans.
• Comply with workplace health and safety requirements when operating sheet metal machinery and performing maintenance or welding tasks.
• Train new line setters as required and support the learning of other line setters as required
• Studying drawings and specifications to determine suitable material, method and sequence of operations, and machine settings
• Fitting fabricated metal parts into products and assembling metal parts and subassemblies to produce machines and equipment
• Checking fabricated and assembled metal parts for accuracy, clearance and fit using precision measuring instruments
• Setting guides, stops and other controls on machining tools, setting up prescribed cutting and shaping tools and dies in machines and presses, and setting controls for textile machines
• Forming metal stock and castings to fine tolerances using machining tools to press, cut, grind, plane, bore and drill metal
• Diagnosing faults and performing operational maintenance of machines, and overhauling and repairing mechanical parts and fluid power equipment

About you

• 5+ years of experience in can manufacturing role and/or canning equipment experience
• Extensive hands-on experience with Soudronic machines, ABM 300, and related can forming equipment
• Mechanical aptitude with the ability to identify faults, trouble shoot, and problem solve effectively
• Ability to work effectively within a team and autonomously as required
• The ability to pass a pre-employment medical
• Experience working with computer-based programmes and modern technology
• Forklift License preferred
• A strong focus on machine efficiency, quality & output to achieve set targets
• Right to work in New Zealand
