Caretaker

About the role

We are seeking a reliable, skilled, and energetic School Caretaker to join our team. This hands-on role is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, presentation, and upkeep of our school buildings, grounds, and facilities. We are spread across 8 sites and you will have access to a school van. You'll be managing routine maintenance tasks, coordinating repairs and contractors, overseeing health and safety requirements, and supporting occasional improvement projects across the school. You'll also play a key role in monitoring maintenance budgets and ensuring resources are used effectively. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, takes pride in their work, and can confidently work independently while also being part of a collaborative team.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain school buildings, grounds, school vehicles and equipment to a high standard
• Carry out general repairs, maintenance, and preventative maintenance activities
• Manage contractors and service providers as required
• Monitor and maintain school health and safety requirements relating to facilities and property
• Assist with school property projects and upgrades
• Manage maintenance budgets, track expenditure, and source cost-effective solutions
• Ensure school grounds are clean, safe, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors
• Identify maintenance issues and proactively resolve problems before they escalate
• Support school events and activities as required

About you

• Experience in building, carpentry, property maintenance, or a related trade
• Strong practical problem-solving skills and the ability to perform a wide range of maintenance tasks
• Highly organised and self-managing
• Able to prioritise work, manage competing demands, and show initiative
• A proactive "can-do" attitude with a willingness to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in
• Honest, reliable, approachable, and dependable
• Comfortable working in a busy school environment surrounded by students with additional needs
• Builds positive relationships with staff, students, contractors, and the wider school community
• Physically fit and able to undertake hands-on maintenance work
• Full Clean New Zealand driver's licence
