What they need
About the role
Structural and finishing carpentry on new build residential developments, frame through to finish. You will spend most of your time on development sites, working through stages frame to finish. Between stages there is other work to get stuck into, from commercial projects to seismic strengthening, repairs, renovations, and extensions. Full-time, 42.5 hours per week, based in Christchurch with occasional work in the wider Canterbury region.
Key responsibilities
- Structural and finishing carpentry on new build residential developments, frame through to finish (the bulk of the role)
- Working to a set programme and hitting agreed milestones without compromising the standard of finish
- New build commercial construction work alongside the developments, including formwork, concrete, and fitout
- Working in a small crew under a site foreman, with project managers and QS team behind you
- Working off plans and specifications, and flagging issues early rather than building around them
- Repairs, renovations, and extensions on existing homes between development stages, including insurance and EQC work
- Seismic strengthening and structural remediation work as it comes up
- Keeping the site tidy, safe, and compliant, including the daily health and safety requirements
About you
- A qualified carpenter, NZ Certificate in Carpentry Level 4 or equivalent, or a third or fourth year apprentice working towards it
- New build experience on residential developments, townhouses, or terraces (or a genuine want to get into it)
- A full NZ driver's licence (essential)
- Speed on the tools paired with a high standard of workmanship
- Confident working from plans and specifications, with minimal supervision if you are qualified, or keen to build that up if you are still an apprentice
- Happy to step off the development and onto commercial, seismic, or repair and renovation work on existing, often occupied, properties when needed
- Solid understanding of the Building Code, NZS 3604, and current weathertightness detailing
- Legally entitled to work in New Zealand, and able to pass a drug and alcohol test and Police check
Benefits
- Permanent, full-time employment with a consistent pipeline of work behind it
- A real run of development work to put your name to, with commercial and other projects to keep it varied
- All PPE and safety gear supplied
- Additional training as required for your role, such as first aid will be provided
- Staff account for material purchases, for personal use, subject to manager approval
- Tool allowance of $1 per hour worked, tax-free
- WorkRide scheme, a tax-effective way to get a new bike or e-bike for your commute
- Genuine support to finish your apprenticeship, with qualified carpenters and a foreman to learn off
- Real progression as the pipeline grows, including leading hand and foreman opportunities
- A positive, forward-focused company that backs its people
