About Cardington Restoration & Joinery
Cardington Restoration & Joinery specialises in the restoration, conservation and manufacture of traditional architectural joinery, with a particular focus on historic, period, Grade I and Grade II listed properties.
We are passionate about traditional craftsmanship and want to build a company recognised not only for the quality of its work, but as one of the best restoration and joinery companies to work for.
As the company continues to develop, we are looking for an experienced Carpenter / Restoration Joiner to join our team.
The Role
This is primarily a site-based, hands-on position for someone who takes pride in traditional carpentry and joinery and enjoys repairing and preserving existing buildings rather than simply replacing everything with new.
You will be provided with a company vehicle and will be trusted to attend projects, assess the work required and carry out high-quality repairs and installations with increasing independence.
Projects will range from individual window and door repairs through to larger restoration projects on historic and listed properties.
Typical Works
Your responsibilities will include:
- Restoration and refurbishment of traditional timber windows.
- Box sash window repairs and refurbishment.
- Casement window repairs.
- Replacement of sash cords, weights, pulleys and associated components.
- Draught-proofing and adjustments.
- Removal and replacement of damaged or rotten timber.
- Traditional timber splice repairs.
- Repairs to window frames, sills, stiles and rails.
- Restoration and repair of traditional timber doors and frames.
- Door hanging, easing and adjustment.
- Installation and replacement of ironmongery.
- Glazing and associated joinery works where required.
- Installation of new windows, doors and bespoke joinery.
- General first and second-fix carpentry associated with restoration projects.
- Timber repairs to historic buildings.
- Working alongside our bench joinery team where required.
- Completing works neatly and respectfully within clients' homes and historic properties.
- Identifying additional defects and reporting them back to the Contracts Manager.
- Taking photographs and maintaining accurate records of completed works.
- Maintaining company tools, equipment and vehicle to a professional standard.
Who We're Looking For
We are looking for an experienced carpenter or joiner who genuinely enjoys the trade and takes pride in producing work to a high standard.
Experience within heritage buildings would be advantageous, but attitude and craftsmanship are equally important.
The ideal person will:
- Have strong carpentry and joinery experience.
- Be confident working independently.
- Understand traditional timber windows and doors.
- Have experience carrying out timber repairs and splicing.
- Be confident installing and adjusting windows and doors.
- Be comfortable working within occupied properties.
- Have excellent attention to detail.
- Be able to identify problems and suggest practical solutions.
- Be reliable, organised and professional.
- Communicate confidently with clients and other members of the team.
- Take pride in keeping their workplace, tools and company vehicle organised.
- Hold a full UK driving licence.
The Person
We're not simply looking for someone who can use the tools.
We're looking for someone who cares about their craft.
Someone who gets satisfaction from taking a 100-year-old window or door that others may consider beyond repair and giving it another generation of life.
We want people within Cardington Restoration & Joinery who take ownership of their work and are proud to put the company's name against what they have completed.
In return, we want to provide our tradespeople with trust, responsibility and freedom.
If you have a better idea or see a better way of completing something, we want you to speak up.
Career Progression
This position also provides an opportunity to develop.
As your knowledge of our projects and standards increases, there will be opportunities to take responsibility for smaller projects, supervise apprentices and improvers, undertake site surveys and eventually progress towards a Lead Restoration Joiner / Site Supervisor position.
Our aim is to build a team where talented tradespeople can develop a genuine career rather than simply move from job to job.
If you're passionate about carpentry, joinery and preserving historic buildings and want to become part of a company with ambitious plans for the future, we'd like to hear from you.
- Fit and install joinery products on-site when required.
- Work from technical drawings and specifications.
- Operate woodworking machinery and hand tools safely and effectively.
- Maintain high standards of quality and attention to detail.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Ensure projects are completed on time and to client expectations.
- Follow all health and safety procedures.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience as a Carpenter and/or Joiner.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
- Strong knowledge of traditional and modern joinery techniques.
- Excellent attention to detail and craftsmanship.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Reliable, hardworking, and professional attitude.
Desirable
- Experience working on listed buildings and heritage projects.
- Site carpentry and installation experience 1st & 2nd fix.
- Relevant NVQ, City & Guilds, or equivalent qualification.
- Experience with timber windows, doors & staircases.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary based on experience.
- Opportunity to work on prestigious heritage and bespoke projects.
- Supportive and friendly working environment.
- Career progression opportunities within a growing company.
- Company pension scheme.
- Ongoing training and development.
