Carpenter / Bench Joiner

Salary: Dependent on experience
Hours: Monday to Friday, 7.00am – 3.30pm, 35 hours per week
Location: Stourbridge, Worcestershire
Contract: Full-time, permanent

MER Services are looking for two experienced Carpenters and/or Bench Joiners to join our team on a full-time, permanent basis, working from our purpose-built workshop in Stourbridge.

Established in 2004, MER Services provide specialist manufacturing, installation and fit-out services to clients across the Museum, Exhibition, Retail and Heritage sectors. We manufacture high-quality, bespoke setworks, display furniture, walling, plinths and other specialist items for museums, galleries and cultural venues across the UK.

Due to an increased workload, we are looking for experienced carpenters and/or bench joiners who have a background in the museum, exhibition, heritage or a closely related sector. The role would suit someone who takes pride in producing high-quality work, can work from drawings and is confident working both as part of a team and independently when required.

Although the role is primarily workshop based, our projects are delivered across the country and therefore regular site work and occasional stays away from home will be required.

The Role

Working alongside our experienced workshop team and reporting to the Workshop Manager, you will be responsible for manufacturing a range of bespoke carpentry and joinery items for our museum and exhibition projects.

The work is varied and will include producing items such as plinths, display furniture, showcase surrounds, walling, architectural features and other bespoke setworks.

The successful candidates will be expected to work to a high standard, often working from detailed CAD drawings and specifications, while being able to use their own initiative and work independently when required.

Main Duties

  • Manufacturing bespoke carpentry and joinery items from CAD drawings and specifications
  • Reading and interpreting technical and construction drawings
  • Producing high-quality setworks and display furniture to tight tolerances
  • Operating workshop machinery including saws, routers and other woodworking equipment
  • Working independently on individual elements of a project when required
  • Working as part of a wider workshop and project team
  • Carrying out site surveys and taking accurate measurements where required
  • Assisting with the installation of finished items on client sites across the UK
  • Working professionally and courteously when representing MER Services on client sites
  • Maintaining a clean, safe and organised working environment

To Be Successful, You Will

  • Have proven experience as a Carpenter and/or Bench Joiner
  • Have previous experience within the museum, exhibition, heritage, retail fit-out or a similar specialist sector
  • Be confident reading and working from CAD and technical drawings
  • Be capable of working independently and using your own initiative
  • Have a strong eye for detail and take pride in producing high-quality finished work
  • Be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and managing changing project requirements
  • Be willing and able to travel and stay away from home when required for site installations
  • Have good communication skills and be comfortable dealing with clients and other contractors professionally
  • Hold a full UK driving licence

Experience with specific machinery is beneficial, although training can be provided where required.

What We Offer

  • Hourly rate dependent on experience
  • Full-time, permanent employment
  • Monday to Friday, 7.00am – 3.30pm
  • 35 hours per week
  • Paid overtime when required, with notice provided wherever possible
  • 20 days' annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Auto-enrolment pension
  • On-site parking
  • Access to company vehicles when travelling to client sites
  • The opportunity to work on varied, high-profile museum, exhibition and heritage projects across the UK

If you are an experienced Carpenter or Bench Joiner looking for a varied role producing bespoke work for some of the UK's leading museums, galleries and cultural venues, we would be interested in hearing from you.
