What they need

  • Disability Support Worker – Cairns

Beyond Daily Life
Cairns, QLD
Casual | SCHADS Award Level 2

About Beyond Daily Life

Beyond Daily Life (BDL) is a locally owned and operated NDIS provider supporting people across Cairns to build independence, confidence, connection and a life that feels meaningful to them.

We’re a small, supportive team providing individual supports, capacity building, counselling and social group programs. Our approach is person-centred, neuroaffirming and focused on working with people rather than simply doing things for them.

As we continue to grow, we’re looking for another Disability Support Worker to join our team.

About the role

This is a varied community-based role supporting NDIS participants to work towards their individual goals.

No two shifts are necessarily the same. Depending on the person you’re supporting, your day might involve:

  • Supporting someone to access the community and build confidence
  • Working on independent living skills, routines, cooking, shopping or budgeting
  • Supporting social connection and participation in activities
  • Helping a participant work towards employment, study or other personal goals
  • Providing practical support at home or in the community
  • Supporting participants to develop communication, organisation and everyday life skills
  • Attending appointments or helping participants navigate community services
  • Encouraging participants to make their own choices and build their independence

Our participants have a diverse range of personalities, interests, goals and support needs, so we’re looking for someone who can adapt their approach to the individual.

Who we're looking for

Qualifications and experience are valuable, but who you are as a person matters just as much to us.

We’d love to hear from you if you are:

  • Reliable and consistent – if you commit to a shift, people are relying on you to be there
  • Friendly, approachable and able to build genuine rapport
  • Patient and comfortable allowing people to do things at their own pace
  • Proactive and able to recognise opportunities to work towards a participant’s goals
  • Respectful of individual choice, identity and different ways of communicating
  • Comfortable working independently in the community
  • Able to maintain professional boundaries while still being warm and personable
  • A clear communicator and a good team player
  • Open to feedback and willing to keep learning

Experience supporting people with disability, autism, ADHD or mental health needs is highly regarded. Relevant qualifications in Disability, Community Services, Mental Health or a similar field are also welcomed.

What you'll need

Successful applicants will need to hold, or be willing and eligible to obtain:

  • NDIS Worker Screening Clearance
  • Working with Children Check / Blue Card where required
  • Current First Aid and CPR
  • Current Australian driver's licence
  • Reliable, insured vehicle
  • NDIS Worker Orientation Module
  • Appropriate Australian working rights

What we offer

At BDL, we want our staff to feel supported too.

You’ll receive:

  • Casual SCHADS Award Level 2 pay rates
  • A supportive local team and approachable management
  • Regular communication and opportunities for feedback
  • Training and professional development opportunities
  • A varied caseload and the opportunity to work with participants whose interests and support needs suit your strengths
  • Meaningful work focused on genuine participant outcomes
  • Opportunities to grow with BDL as our organisation continues to develop

We also run social programs including Dungeons & Dragons, board games, chess and other community-based activities, so if you have hobbies, interests or skills you can bring to the role, we’d love to hear about them.

Hours

This is initially a casual position, with hours dependent on participant needs and suitable worker-participant matching.

Supports may occur during weekdays, afternoons/evenings and occasionally weekends. We aim to build consistent ongoing schedules wherever possible.

How to apply

Please submit your resume and a short cover letter telling us a little about yourself, your experience and why you think you’d be a good fit for Beyond Daily Life.

We’re particularly interested in hearing about you as a person – your interests, strengths and what you think makes a great Support Worker.

Beyond Daily Life values diversity and welcomes applications from people of different backgrounds, identities and lived experiences.

We look forward to hearing from you!
